My friend has had one for over 4 years now. Still not fallen over or broken!
yeah exactly. the ones of this size should be fine since they're laid flat but i've got one that's double this size as well and that's the one i'm more worried about because the amount of weight in that must be massive. most people have absolutely no problem with them but i've heard a few stories from people about collapse. they're by far in the minority though so it's not as if they're a massive risk but one you should be aware of at least

it's the side bits that are the weak link because they're full of weird honeycomb stuff that's not very strong, which is why the fall sideways - but the good thing about that is that the damage to your vinyl is likely to be minimal. and after that quick google search it's confirmed that it's the big ones that are the problem as well
HAHAHA. The one at the top is the one i have but, i've followed the golden rule (see above). One more rule. DONT FUCKING LEAN ON IT FFS!

badger wrote:it might end up at the right height if you've got all your stuff in flight cases already
Im not to sure as the flight case dont really heighten the gear inside it just sits in there so it would be the same height in or out of the case..

As for the collapsing thats just ikea gear in general.. Doesnt like excesive weight and it all seems to be honeycomb cardboard insides and veneer.. Just dont overload it and move it to much..

On a slightly diffrent note though Ikea have always had shelving units/boxs that seem to have that 12" x 12" storage space thing going on.. Im still using some canvas box things that I picked up in Ikea when I was a kid to keep my older records in..
These:-

They look propa grubby cause they must me at least 5 years old but a good buy..

having them full of vinyl classes as overloading i reckon heh, but going to be careful and should be fine

i've got some of those boxes too and they're really useful. the new ones aren't as good as the old ones that my housemate has though because they aren't solid all the way up to the top, and the bottom is only kept in place by velcro so i can't see that holding up if you try and pick it up full of vinyl

Yeah them babys are well handy, they weigh a ton with all the vinyl in and im actually surprised how long they've lasted with no sign of needing replacing anytime soon.. Think they were a bargain too..

Ikea do shelving thats the same as the one above but split in 2 - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20135300 .
Gives it a bit more length and means I can have speaks on either end. I havent put anything on top though so whenever I have a mix my back hurts like fuck. Shouldn't be too costly to get a thick bit of wood to go on top though.

I need to get round to doing this.

Luckily at uni I have a fucking massive room and so can have them all in small groups according to genre propped up vertically against the wall

when I'm home over summer though. No room at my mum's house

did some research and they got really good reviews on what hifi and look pretty sekseh unlike a lot of stands. fairly expensive but worth it imo - not only do they put speakers at a decent height but they make a very noticeable difference in sound quality, and i hear that gets even better when you fill up the central column but i've not done that yet as i can't be arsed until i'm living somewhere more permanently. atacama sell some stuff called atabites that are fairly expensive but you can use a bag of kiln dried sand that's like £6 from b&q and does the job almost as well

i resisted telling jam1 that it was a bad idea to put speakers on his desk as he seemed happy with his lovely new set up and i didn't want to piss on his parade but it's a pet hate of mine. people go to the effort of making a nice set up and using decent speakers and then don't bother to isolate them properly. aside from resonance problems of having speakers on a desk, cartridges are effectively microphones so will pick up unwanted noise from your speakers if you have them on the same surface
