why not just reveal it in form of a salted hash?

Sounds to me like a marketing directive.

I agree with the principal of the idea but is there no other way of owsting these people?

Trolling is a term i never even heard on this forum untill about a year ago and now i hear it in 99% of threads and its cringe-worthy.

Its a shame the way this forum has gone. Its the only forum i was (and, to a certain extent, still am) an active member of. Its just not such a close knit comunity any more i guess.
desto wrote:...The signal to noise ratio here is astoundingly bad nowadays, but it has to be said it's good to still see people talk about music here too which was the original purpose of the board (instead of daycare)

Supporting Seckle on this one. Maybe with the partial IP addresses to prevent some of the issues discussed here. It won't solve everything but a superimposed banning policy, shame list or whatnot would end in next level whining.

Just my two cents, don't get aggy over this please. (Just having to write a disclaimer like that says something about the state of affairs here don't it?
agreed.

The thing is wont having this IP checker thing just cause poeple to make wingey "XX is really YY!!" type threads about the "trolls" anyway?

No, not if it's visible to everyone. And I still wouldn't be comfortable if only moderators and admins could see it. So no thanks.

yeah I don't really get what this would actually accomplish

"hey, this guy acting like a dick is actually this other guy who was acting like a dick!"

???

essentially with the added bonus of giving their ip address
why this is more of a concern than protecting from spambots and malicious advertising code is beyond me
hell even more mods would be a solution, preferable ones who aren't on tours all the time heh

it's like that on any forum
install tor or a few proxies if you're paranoid

NOTHING is being changed. NOTHING. Rest assured. This is only a poll, to see if there's enough people that think it would help with the trolling, and general discussion level on this site. Some of these brand new alias accounts created only to start problems, needs to be sorted one way or another.

naming and shaming, in some sort of published list...is NOT a solution.
bring back the old dubstep knowledge question, add a captcha, and implement an approval system if it's so worrying
or have a set given amount of time/posts before a user can start topics, but not reply to threads (time being the one that is better)
personally i think you should just expand the mod team some more if you guys are so swamped, either that or actually show people how the reporting system works to make things less a headache for you guys.
agree with this,

Dubstep knowledge question is a good idea, too many clueless people signing up and starting stupid threads, not reading the rules etc. etc.

Not only that, but for fuck sake organise the forum better. The one general "dubstep" area is chaos, why not seperate it into "releases" "gen discussion" and so on and so forth, i participate in forums far bigger then this and moderation and organisation is the key to a well run forum, seems like theres plenty of members who've been here for a long while, are level headed and have a shitload of knowledge, wouldn't be hard finding people keen to help clean this place up?

Id support this 100% if it meant this place returned to any semblance of what it used to be (...for want of a better word, "good")

for example i could pull your ip info if i really wanted to using a simple 1x1 pixel image and a webserver which keeps logs of who accessed that file, toss it in my sig then pm the targeted user some innocuous question and just play a waiting game.
they still need to run a script or follow a link tho yeah?

in any event displaying a partial IP would solve this problem
fractal wrote:I would say a lot of people on this forum probabably have a static address, for port forwarding purposes
thats actually only your local adress that stays static (and if you use that IP adress youll have about a million 192.168.1.1.... s)

proxies could be used but it is admittedly a pain in the ass searching up decent proxies.

1 con: if you're a dsl user your IP address resets every time you restart your modem.

Seen on plenty of forums where if you click on someones profile it simply states "other users from this IP". Something to check into.

Reveals trolls, not ips.

It's all just zomby alias's anywho.

fucking perfect!

i really don't think the idea behind this is inherently risky for users.

nope take the graphics in my banner, everytime someone's browser loads those i get their info in log form as your browser is accessing my server to view the content
and as i said if you want someone specific you can make an innocuous 1x1 or transparent graphic hide it in a sig or off site avatar etc and just pm the target to get their ip info
the joys of networking and the internet

and that gets you my ip address...which is what you're so worried about to begin with?
i don't understand your complaint then if you're actively telling people how to harvest IP address off this forum...

additionally i'd still have to open some sort of connection with a third party site before you could run a script on machine...

i spend a shameful ammount of time on pornbb.org btw and the only attacks on machine come from third party image hosting sites (typically pdf attacks)

and thats a massive site... idk what you would expect to happen here if members could view partial IP addresses of other members but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't happen.

i'm saying don't make it into the phone book
maybe yes or no as far as a script on your machine, but i'm not gonna go full blown network security hacker guy mode
personally i could give a damn if someone has my ip addy or in this case my neighbors since i'm leeching his wifi
i know how to route through proxies and mask it or reset it if need be
i also keep my software up to date and have protection from malicious software and block the majority of crap that can host it before it even has a chance
what i'm saying is how many average joes that browse this board can say that with certainty
i think that malware shit not to long back proved that
