Well i've never been afraid to say I don't know. Thats honestly why i was asking. but I mean... just because it's Skream?

That doesn't do it for me. I see no reason not to believe Skream can make other types of EDM than dubstep.

I was just hoping someone would say something other than "because it's by Skream". Still waiting.

Also I never said snare had to be on 3 or even that there had to be one snare. Just a half time vibe on the drums. I often put my snares on 4 or 2 to give my tracks a different feel but it's still halftime and it's still dubstep.

EDIT: And yes at the 'start of dubstep' tracks were still fulltime...that's because folks were making garage and slowly taking it into a 'slower' and darker place, just because it's where the roots of the genre lie doesn't mean that they weren't still making garage. All those tunes Sharmaji posted are either garage or halftime :s

There are so many tunes between 135-145 with lots of subbass that AREN''T dubstep but I haven't heard ANY tunes that are 135-145, lots of subbbass and halftime that couldn't be called dubstep. Case closed.

Just because something isn't dubstep doesn't stop it from being a good tune, too many people are getting caught in this fanboy vibe on this forum. There's no need to get angry or call me dumb, I'm pretty clever, I did well in school and shit and I didn't insult anyone. If a song you made isn't dubstep or a song you like isn't then so what? It doesn't mean it isn't good, doesn't mean it isn't dark and it doesn't mean you can't drop it in a dubstep set.

You can't say those things define the genre when they clearly don't, I could go on all day but here's just 2 examples of tunes around the 140 mark that are bass driven but clearly aren't dubstep 0.o

It wasn't meant as; every track which contains any form of instrument is good.
I like instruments in dubstep tunes.. So in this case it's all about personal taste.

I'd say put whatever instruments you can play into your music. Electronic music with real instruments sounds a lot fresher than just pure midi in my opinion

I use a talk box with an electric guitar and you can make sick distorted wobbles with your mouth. I did it in a track called, Widow. It worked out nice and original! Always be original!

Yeah I'd say the only two qualifying features are a strong sub and around 140 bpm

Then of course there's a halftime feel, a percussion-centric vibe, a drop at 32 bars/54 seconds, etc etc etc but I consider all of those to be optional

guitar samples are a really good way to add that "certain something" to your tracks, as a lot of tracks will feel empty without any vocals or real instruments.

yesterday i took a sample of an f chord, reggae strum, and made a progression out of it. took the sound and duplicated it 3 times, time-stretched one or two layers different amounts, different delays/verb on all 3 layers, enough saturation to make it really warm - and then play with the pitch. it actually sounds ridiculously good when placed with some halftime drums and filtered/pitched noise.

playing guitar well will be an extremely good resource for samples, as well as just a general knowledge of how music is put together.



anndddd on the note of dubstep: if the artist says it's dubstep - IT'S FUCKING DUBSTEP.
