if numark, stanton, gemini etc. are still in production, then i find it hard to believe the brainchild of turntables would have to completely cease production

This makes sense. Tied in with the history this rumour has I think we can safely infer that it's bullshit. Might not be of course, but there isn't really an awful lot going for the idea until there's an official press release (or some info explaining why this particular product has to cease if the vinyl turntable market is still viable).

p.s. your post count is "808" 8)

I was going to say.

Why is the "industry Standard" stopping production when you've got people like Numark still going strong. Makes no sense.

the only reason why numark and other companies can still manage is because they use much cheaper quality parts than technics, there for getting the parts is a lot easier.

technics use much higher quality parts, and are therefore a little pricier leading to diminished sales.

perhaps a more economical line of technic turntables with middle of the line parts for the strapped on cash dj would have helped them stay in business.

I think its worth mentioning that numark, stanton, gemini are all companies that only make DJ gear. technics, on the other hand, is manufactured by panasonic, which makes pretty much everything you plug into the wall.. I could easily see a bunch of execs at a panasonic board meeting axing 1200/1210s because the cost to manufactor is high, sales are possibly low (obviously panasonic doesn't get any money from the active resale market), and they're probably makin a shitload off TV sales anyhow.

A pluasible scenario, but you're only missing one thing: proof

I know I've seen this rumor at least 3 times over my time here

There's never any proof to the claim, but always a lot of supposing

yea, i still find it hard to believe that this is true

only 1 relevant result from some forum, not really enough for me

Vinyl will cease production eventually. Mainly because the companies who produce the lacquers for pressing are rapidly going out of business.

No more lacquers = no more dubplates or vinyl.

So discontinued 1210's ain't the end. The discontinued lacquers will be.

So, we need a new way of pressing vinyl without lacquers.

Anyways, the Internet downloading of leagal & illegal mp3's killed vinyl. If everyone still bought vinyl, the lacquers would still have a high enough demand to keep them in business.

I can't see technics stopping production of 1210's for a while. Possibly slow production. But not cease. I hope not anyways.

I guess time will tell.

wouldn't the loss of competition make the few that remain stronger?

Obviously this thread is BS anyway, but even if Panny did stop making them, they last fucking forever anyway :m:

Calling BULLSHIT on this one just like all the others. Whats interesting when the last virus was going around the net I looked and couldn't find any new techs for sale but now you can find MK5's all over the place so they must have had a run since then...

Related to what Eddy was saying: A problem is that as time goes on it becomes harder and harder to source replacement parts for cutting lathes as companies (like Neumann) who manufactured them in the first place moved away from vinyl cutting with the advent of CD. With modern (read: heavily compressed, loud) music, there must be quite a bit of stress put on the cutting head. I don't know what the story actually is at places like Transition or The Exchange but if a lathe breaks down then it must be a costly process to get things repaired.

The last post makes a good point, i got told that apparently there is only one lathe technician left who knows how to fix the Neumann lathes. When he retires shits gonna hit the fan.

now you're replacing a rumor with another rumor. the vinyl industry is still alive and will be for a long time. electronic music isn't the first or only type of music to utilize this form of media. last i heard vinyl sales were actually climbing rapidly.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/musi ... sance.html

now as far as the panasonic rumors, all bullshit. and i wouldn't doubt for a second some greedy company ie: guitar center would start that rumor in the first place.

I just posted this on DOA, thought I would share.

1. First of all................... End of production announced on the Panasonic Japan website:

[生産終了: end of production.]

SL1200 MK6 - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... SL-1200MK6

SL1200 MK5 - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... SL-1200MK5

SL1200 MK4 - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... SL-1200MK4

SL1200 MK3DS - discontinued: http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.d ... -1200MK3DS

SL1200 MK3 - absolutely no mention of it in their catalogue

SL1200 MK2 - same as above

2. The article in the online version of the Asahi Shimbun, the second newspaper in terms of circulation and probably the best in terms of journalism is dated... the 21st of October 2010, last week (I have a paper copy): http://www.asahi.com/business/update/10 ... 00170.html

3. TWO announcements in the Yomiuri Shimbun, dated October the 20th:

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/atmoney/news/2 ... T00665.htm

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/net/news/20101 ... T00858.htm

4. Announcement by Power dj's, a huge retailer:

Image

They are announcing their final sale of SL1200's. Power dj's (Ikebukuro) say they have received an official notice from Panasonic. They are not the only ones... They seem pretty upset about the whole thing... They discuss this announcement on their blog and twitter account (scroll down to October first).

http://twitter.com/#!/Power_DJs

5. I called Panasonic Corp. DAV headquarters in Osaka to confirm the information.

I was told: mention of this was made in the ordinary meeting of Shareholders in May 2010. Reasons cited: integration and closure of specific manufacturing sites, from the point of view of optimal production, withdrawal from unprofitable businesses, downsizing of the workforce. There will be a press release most likely after the announcement of its consolidated financial results at the end of this month.

6. Sumiya music store, another huge retailer:

"テクニクスがSLシリーズのターンテーブル生産終了するそうです"
"Production of the Technics SL series of turntables has ended."

etc.
