Safe man. Im glad its a mixture of people and not just 1 kind. Dubcamp is for everyone no matter who u are or where u come from. Thats how it used to be back in the day and thats what im trying to bring back.

It kills me to hear in recent posts the beef that goes on down south and other places.

We all listen and play the same music. Realy do hope the vibes get better.

What plasticman said about never wantin to play at a U18's grime event is very interesting, and extremely understandable. I know i'm going on but just one more thing. When (young) Grime/Garage MC's spit, it's called 'merking', that gives you feel for the vibe of the currant grime scene! all the beef and aggro would be thrown out the window if there was a family-like scene (ie. dubstep), but right now all there is seperate groups that seemingly hate and want to eradicate each other, even though they are all part of the same scene!

Maybe i'm partially guessing, but you gotta admit sum of it's tru. I'd really love for promoters to be able to put on Grime nights more often, theres so much talent in the scene all across the country, but the aggro is pretty much part of the package.

Sounds like you're on the right track fella. Dubpressure and DMZ seem safe as, really good vibes in both. Never really understood the need for grief and aggression in what's essentially supposed to be a fun, social occassion.

I am happy to say that I have never had ANY grief at dubstep events in Nottingham - it would probably put me off the music if I started to get shit at events.

I can't subscribe to all the fake, macho, wannabe shite that some people attach to certain types of music. That's just some conformist robot idiocy.

It's got NOTHING to do with the music!

dirty canvas is great and the promoters are doing a lot to find a better venue than the ica, because frankly... it's too chilled out. the hype at sidewinder is unmatched imo.

I think I just had a bad experience.... just never in my life had I been waiting at a bar for a drink only to be purposefully barged into then squared up to by somebody who has nothing to say to me other than "FUCKING SMILE THEN"..... to which I replied "What is there to smile about? I'm waiting for a drink mate?"

And this comes from somebody who goes out in Croydon nearly every weekend.

I've never been a target for trouble in my life.... I'd like to think I was giving somebody a reason to start on me... I was just minding my own business waiting at the bar staring at my own reflection in the mirrors behind the optics on the bar.

The thing I hated most about it was the fact the guy backed down when he realised there were a few people with me.... he only started cos I am a short guy standing on what he thought was "my own".

The music on the night was decent.... although Bristol was 100 times better a few weeks later

I've always avoided VIP areas at any rave or event - I like to get a feel for the music the same way the punters do

Although I do recall spending a little time there after my incident at the bar in room 2. Its quite ironic that I would say the main reason I avoid the VIP areas is because I don't like to feel like i am part of some kind of "elite" group at any event. Unfortunately for me I spent my time there purely because it was the only place in that venue I felt safe - as I was surrounded by people who actually have respect for me.

I remember walking thru the dance thinking it was screwface city.

Bristol a few weeks later was a complete breath of fresh air - spent the whole of Newham Gens set in the audience and loved it. The only hostility I felt was upstairs at the back bar, that was until Big Narstie stopped me to chat, after that all the watchful eyes seemed to switch off. Still - nobody should ever feel that people are staring them down.

I just hate the fact it goes on - seemingly for no reason. I've never got involved in any kind of music dramas so I can't understand why anyone would have a reason to do me something? Sidewinder are looking to do another event in Bristol in June so I'm hoping they get a nice crowd there and not half of Swindon's beef-seekers. I'm looking to drop a full on dubstep set if i am booked, just to see how it goes down. I reckon the more twisted Coki & Skream-esque stuff is as good as grime to the untrained ear.

It weren't just some crowd causing it either. It was people who were there with some of the Meridian man. Artists who were meant to be performing on the night.

There was even a pregnant white woman and her husband(?) shooting up in the rave.

Certain artists were snorting white off the tables.

Thing I don't understand is how you're not going to allow people in who are wearing a Hood, have that much security on the door, but still let people in with leng and shanks etc. Why would u pay 20 pound 2 rave, travel to Swindon and sit on a sofa with 15 man screw facing everyone.

I'm suprised u missed it tho, my man in VIP fought off about 5/6 others until the champagne bottles & chairs started flying in. Next thing there were about 15 feds in the place and a stampede in the main room.

Rave still carried on though, but vibes were swag.

Yh Big Narstie is cool still. He was just vibing by himself in the crowd by the bar.

Do u have any info of whos performing @ the bristol one? I don't think it will put people off. If there is a Sidewinder, the goons will be there

Nice one for bumping that, an interesting read indeed - and a really good example of how people in dubstep can take an even-handed and intelligent view of important issues like this...

I'd be really interested to hear how people think things have changed now with dubstep that much bigger than in 2009, the Funky scene bigger, and grime in a state of flux as more artists cross over with dubstep and house etc....

i must say, the couple of funky nights ive been to, at one things kicked off outside and the other got proper stared down by a few. though i aint been to many i dunno how this reflects the whole scene, and other than those few vibes were generally good inside. And i can safely say ive never got bad vibes from a single dubstep night, which is undoubtedly a good thing for a scene

The only trouble I've ever had at a dubstep night was this guy in the toilets "accusing" me (I dunno why) of being a Southerner rofl. However I got shoved by this guy at a lame student night at the Faversham in Leeds the other night and stared out - indie kids are dangerous mate!!

this thread makes for an interesting read and i don't really have a whole lot more to offer...

ultimately the police do discriminate with how the form you fill out is worded when putting on a music event for in their eyes black people..maybe you could say not middle class people but that's just as bad anyway

the reason in a way these events are bad is because of the legacy left due to the relatively short history of the breeding of these genres in this country..

history is full of examples of institutional racism in music...

jazz for example was refered to as race music during the 40s golden era and wasn't played on the radio....sarah vaughan, billie holiday etc but when a white musician covered a song it got instant airplay

i just wanted to add at least in the UK the cops arent all rolling in guns blazing. out here in nyc , if youre the slightest bit dark skinned and you dont answer the cops right away, you get fucking shot . fuck the police

obviously not all the cops are like that, but there's been several high profile shootings involving cops in the last few years

I know it's a fucking nightmare in the US for shit like that, but it isn't unheard of for UK police to do the same. Just recently an unarmed 60 year old man was shot dead by police over here - and armed police shot a man dead running through a subway station some years ago thinking he was a "terrorist" - turns out he was not. Wouldn't surprise me if there was more.

EDIT: and the guy the police killed at the G20 a few weeks ago who was just passing by.
