^ same here, i think el-b is as untouchable for garage as jay dee is for hiphop...

thing is i can hear the garage influence in benga's stuff... and he's still somehow attached to that world... the day it hit me i was able to feel the skippyness of his drums.. kinda like how i love machinedrum's stuff because ive been such a hardcore slum village fan (even tho hes never put something like Common's dooinit or Qtips lets ride out).

drumwise i like the more odd stuff like the drums on 2562s kameleon, or on blawans fram/iddy... toasty or mala's weirder releases... or of course the burial stuff

i just think its cool how benga still manages to get a good movement in what he does. it sounds legit even if his samples are really clean and cheezy. he has skills.

in the more dubstep sounding dubstep... and the hihat driven grooves.. Coki has the purest drums to me tho...

I thought he just sampled Rusko's drums and looped them up?

Speaking of rusko, his beats were fairly good back in the good old days, when he was from leeds not america and he made dubstep not this commercialist bollocks hes currently touting.

His hair is tremendous and so are Bengas drums, the swing he has with them is beautiful. But the quality of Ruskos tunes since he went on his jolly to america have utterly nosedived.

I'm sure I'll become a DSF leper for saying this, but fuck it. I've tried and tried and I just can't get into anything that Benga's done.

It's not that I think he is a bad producer, His shit just doesn't get me moving.

fair dos man, each to their own I guess, but I prefer Bengas stuff more to brosteppy datsicion tings for sure

He definitely has a distinct style of drum programming, for me it defines his sound and I don't think there are many other producers that use the same style of pattern, or at least use it as well. I like to think of it as somewhere in between 2 step and half step.

I think I got it wrong but its the 4/4 kick beat with the last kick either omitted or kept in

That sounds even worse than kick 1 snare 3.

Like the most basic, thoughtless drum beat you could make.

Or we could be like gabber and put a kick on every 1/16. Lots of life in those kicks. To each his own.

The 4x4 sorta thing he's talking about that Rusko (sometimes) employs comes from reggae not gabba.
