Cheers for the heads up. especially since I finally bought a mic (cheap one) and I've been doing more recording of nosies and nature,etc. I tell you, recording your own sounds, at least for me, brought a breath of fresh air to my productions. Don't know why I haven't done this earlier.

I've come up with this drone-track lately. hope it's not too shameless to hijack this thread, but i thought i could contribute to the topic posting my track. it's also in the dubs section.
most of the patches are done with ableton's operator, i.e. fm-synthesis with a lot of live-automation going on to keep the sounds constantly evolving; some are also samples stretched out.

I've never been exactly sure how these guys generate these constantly evolving soundworlds, the true master for me is Steve Roach whose tracks are full and rich but always seem perfectly controlled, I guess it's judicial use of EQ/compression and understanding of gain structure:

Neways, just to share my 2 cents, when it comes to atmospheres, My usual port of call is Massives wavetables. SUBTLE wavetable modulation with an lfo, speed dependant on desired sound after finding the sweet spot, slight detuning between oscillators, EG's on the filter cutoff, resonance if required, sine shaper, chorus, reverb. More reverb, long decays, Short delay (like 1/64th for extra metallic-y harmonics), EQ, Shorter reverb, long delay time, Medium reverb, parallel distort, compress, then my gem for atmo's - Waves gtrstompbox, vibralo pedal, SUBTLE tremelo with a slow sync. Tremelo works a treat! Add rhythmic volume automation, and voila!
