I thought by the time you were 18 it was gonna be impposible if not very hard to try and make music whether in a DAW or via an instrument. Either way I started just after I turned 18, now 19 so I've been making music for a year and a bit so far, already improved alot can't wait to see how much better I get by the time I've done it for 5 years.

You're definitely not too old. The best thing you could do is get a simple DAW and use that to learn the basics. It's pretty easy to make something in FL Studio, but it still offers a lot of options. Just try creating drumloops, and then adding some melodies. The basics of synthesis are also not too hard (Oscillators, Filters, Envelopes and LFO). I started using FL Studio when I was 10, I'm 15 now and I'm using Reason. I hope this reply will be helpfull.
Cheers

no way you're too old. you're 23!! in fact what a great time to start, assuming you haven't a family/kids yet. and maybe out of school? as long as you put away the right time to learn, age makes no difference

I'm gonna get a lot of hating for this, but i know it's true:
DONT USE ABLETON AS YOUR FIRST DAW. It's not a good learning daw. It just isn't. I tried the same thing, had the trial for a month, then i skipped to Reason and i picked up more in a week of Reason than in a month of Ableton. Lots of tutorials for it too.
