UKG had/has? a lot of aspects - it was a bit of an umbrella term. There are dubby two-steppas that are very near some of the tunes of today - standard. You can't put music into narrow categories.

I think it's getting to the point you can't just say "dubstep" anymore.

I don't think these recent halfstep releases coming out now have much to do with early Tempa Allstars/ 2004 Kode 9/ Loefah/Digital Mystikz etc. stuff......i mean you can barely mix it.....

just lilke UKG...yeah there are tons of dubby 2-step tunes that have much to do with early dubstep....HAtcha/Youngsta/El-B etc etc roots of dubstep etc...
but there are also tons of super RNB, basically cheesy house tunes as well...

but what do i know

i didn't say you couldn't.
I meant that i don't normally do it, I don't find that it works that well most of the time, personally.

It's not just about the bpm, it's the whole feel/timbre etc of the tunes as well.

I find limiting yourself to one vibe pretty dull.. it's possible if you work to play across the board and still have it feel natural... check out a oneman set sometime, he does it best battering all the new releases is easier though for sure

I was talking about how i wouldnt mix one with the other, back to back necesarily,
not saying i only play one vibe the whole set!
I always play very eclectic sets.

i actually play ALL over the board....

(bass, booty/ghettotech, techno, breaks, electro, disco, rock etc etc etc)

so for me to even stick to dubstep/2-step/grime etc is limiting enough....


but all this is "ridiculous" digression...

all i set out to say in the beginning is that i feel that using the term dubstep is becoming increasingly vague these days, due to the way that different sounds/styles are carving different paths...at least i think so.

so given that, of course some dubstep may indeed be akin to slowed down garage!
But some is not at all........

sometimes i think it's irrevlevant to talk about music so much.
just listen to some, make some, or skank out.......

I got the idea it was speed garage with ragga vocals, or tunes that were speed garage with less house and rnb influence, the rudeboy end of speed garage at the time - the vocal version of Ripgroove by Double 99 (can't remember who the vocalist was though). Think this was late 90's though and don't think grime really started coming out until 2001 (may be wrong in this)

Think the basslines were more jungle/dnb influenced generally.

Not too sure about the timeline on this, but I think the original grime was something more to do with Agent X doing more brutal basslines and lyrics getting more "real". Pretty sure Roar Beats by Corporation of London's proto-grime.

Grime started with 8 bar, like the roar beats tune, and pulse x and of course eskimo. Raggage came about the time of 138 trek and buddah finger. It was basically dub, with a 2 step beat
