Brilliant footage, and narrated by William Shatner no less!
truly a fascinating (and sobering) documentary, I was going to say the Atom bomb, but thought it would be a bit cliche so went with the pez dispenser
don't know if anyone has ever seen the atomic cafe?? Or seen any doc's on the cuban missile crisis...
if you think that that doc is amazing

as a point why do a lot of you regard language as an 'achievement'
in itself its certainly one of the most fundamental aspects of being a human, both spoken and written, but isn't language supposedly innate in some way... our ability to use language grows, it isn't learned (until later when it MUST be learned)
our linguistic skills are in-built, fundamental and intrinsic properties of being human... in that way language was never a goal, language was a natural tool, thus language was never strived for and thus not 'achieved' in the sense of the word i assume is being used in the question at hand.
the only languages i can think of which could be seen as a human achievement are translations of language into new symbolic forms such as forms of logic, mathematics, sign language, certain forms of code (not sure if computer code would be classed as morse code since the informative content is seemingly different... one is controlling electrical information, the other describing thought/language based content in a symbolic form)

interesting point, to be honest i dont know enough about the roots and evolution of language, at least in prehistoric terms, to be able to come up with a genuinely interesting reply. I guess its true, language was never something to be achieved, but there was no such thing as "achievement" until language came about to describe something as an achievement. So whilst not necessarily an achievement in itself, no achievement on this list could be facilitated without it, so its pretty vital to humanity as it stands today.

what came first, (practical use of) fire or language?

fire, not really impressed with as it occurs naturally. Even if we would have never learned to create it, we would have been able to harness the natural occurring fires for the same use eventually.

One could argue that the human race would not be here at all if we hadn't worked out how to create fire.
Also, I have never in my life seen a naturally occurring fire. We don't have too many volcanoes/lightning hitting super dry trees round here.

for forests to actually grow (sounds kinda odd I know) fires help regulate growth by burning shit down, then plants regrow bigger. natural fires happen from lightning a lot of times.
