I think there's a couple of questions on this page sitting unanswered, I'll get to them later on when I have a bit more time :)

To get C lydian............. just take C major (Ionian) and sharpen the 4th. So instead of F natural, you play F#. MUCH simpler, and much more intuitive than this "built off of the 4th degree of this major scale" crap.
Just because you don't like the way I've described this doesn't really give you remit to stroll in and declare it to be 'crap'; Do you really think the best way to get people to understand modes is by giving them ANOTHER way to understand them on top of the one I just gave them? No, it's not - if you want to lay it out your way make a new thread and do it.

There's a reason people teach using the scale degrees rather than doing it your way.
lol...buddy...no need to get butthurt.. i was simply contributing to your thread. there are just as many reasons why people choose to explain things my way as well as yours, believe it or not. i didnt just make this method up. but you do you man. i was simply trying to help out the person i quoted, who seemed utterly confused by your explanation. ill stop posting in this thread. sorry if i offended you :W:

oh and that creativeguitarstudio guy is the shit! love his videos.

I just still don't understand their actual use... even though I have tried many times to learn this stuff on guitar because it "would improve your playing".

Could you do the chord example in your original post but with C minor instead of major? Never use major really :// 2 emo
Not a problem man, it'll take me a little while to write it out, so I'll edit this post later with that for you, and as well, I think I'll hunt down some links to more resources for you that might help.
grooki wrote:OK I think I get it now. Pavarais' questions were useful too. So, to check whether I'm getting this at all:

This song is in the key of C (according to my book). Here, after the little intro, at 10 seconds he starts playing chords
Chords: |F------------|C------------|F-----------|C-----------|E------------|F----------|C----------|G---------------|F
Modes: |F Lydian----|C Ionian----|F Lydian---|C Ionian---|EPhrygian-|F Lydian---|C Ionian--|G Mixolydian-|F Lydian

Is this right?
Yes man, that's it :) you'll maybe find as well that you can throw in a few black notes here and there, because this is a blues song so those chromatic elements will lend will to it at certain points.

That's a class tune too, I'd never heard it before, but I listened to it on loop last night for a good half hour. Really nice.

I've nothing against you, no bad feelings, no anger, I just expect a degree of respect and to not have what is essentially well over 1h30mins+ work in writing and proof reading declared to be 'crap', and I don't think it's 'butthurt' to expect that. I appreciate people contributing, I appreciate people helping field these questions if they can. But I don't appreciate people strolling in and acting like a tit then calling me butthurt when I don't respond well to it. Granted I did write my last response to you in haste, and I was a little irked, I tend to speak before I think, so I'm sorry if I seemed abrasive, I just don't respond well to what I perceive as disrespectful or rude comments.

Just listened to that blues song, wow, totally amazing. That's my absolute favourite type of music, proper old timey blues. It's always upset me that no matter what I do I can't replicate or write like that on the guitar. Totally beyond my abilities.

It is an awesome song isn't it? Whenever I listen to it I have to listen to it a few times in a row too. Mississippi John Hurt, his other songs are beautiful too.

Fucking proper thread. Dude deserves all the thanks he's getting. Just wish I wasn't stuck behind a counter at work while reading this. I want to put into practice!

Other than that it's perfect timing for me; I've avoided learning any proper theory until now for favour of using solely my ear and think it's about time I got a little more serious.

Been lamping out on this board for a few months now and still can't get over how useful it is and how helpful people on here are

When I read this stuff I think I get it, but when I try to apply it I'm just blank :(

I'm sorry if this is a huge favor to ask but could anyone send me a small flp of any examples in this thread? I think it would be the best way for me to be able to see how the words translate and I mighttt just start to understand it. I've found that's the best way I learn things like this.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this post.

This is now going to be my main focus from now on until I can use it (even if in the most simple way).

Cheers.

In terms of application, I noticed in your original example you switched between modes depending on the chord. Is it common to stay in one mode, for instance, write a song entirely in Phrygian?

And for that, when writing chord progressions, would the I chord correspond with the 3rd degree of the scale as a root note?

So for instance, if I was using the C major scale, and wanted to write in the Phygrian mode. Would I = Eminor ?

Cheers

But yeah, really nice tutorial. Much clearer than most I've looked up.
