Not gonna get on to some US gun debate...but I don't think that'd particularaly stop any country from invading, if it was an invasion situation- in a time like WW2 pretty much every man of fighting age in Europe was trained and in the armed forces or doing some useful work to help the war effort- armed with machine guns/grenades/tanks and whatever and well organised. So you'd only be left with those that can't fight in the army using their wallmart guns, as long as there was some warning the country would arm and train the left over citizens as a last resort anyway- like the home guard style in the UK in WW2.

Guns out number people in the US and a large portion of our population is more experienced with firing weapons than the average serviceman in many foreign armies.

This would play into the thought process of an invading force. Just as it plays into our thought process on the contrary.

Art of War talks about places where every man carries a sword every man is a warrior. A city where only soldiers carry swords leaves a feeble population if they are defeated (paraphrasing here).

Not glorifying as it's a large part of our countries problem... but good news if zombies or scary foreigners come!

i've often talked about this with friends

i'd round up a group, a very select group, out of all my friends - about 10 of us, we'll move onto Hilton Hotel in the centre of town. restaurant and supplies half way up the building to cater for 1000+ hotel; electricity + its own generators; helipad; Casino - entertainment + shitloads of money to buy our way out eventually/bribe other gangs

weaponry?? we'd bring ONE of the dodgy lot with us, when he's not with his mates he's fine so he'll sort all that out and we'll be reet.

the problem is taking the hotel in the first place, but once we have it we're in control of the biggest, strongest building in manchester with a 360 view over the whole city - and we'll be able to spot intruders from miles away.

The problem with bladed/hacking weapons is that you have to free them from a zombie's body after stabbing/hacking at it. This gives time for the other 20 zombies around you to get you.

The best way to survive is to surround oneself with cannon fodder and decoys. At least until I manage to make it to the seaside and swim over to Puffin Island. Plenty of birds to eat and zombies can't swim.

yeah, no, the world's largest and best equipped army is the deterrent against invading America, not a bunch of redneck minutemen who happen to have a hard-on for guns.
And I don't know what kind of army you're alluding to that is less experienced with firing weapons than the US population. Maybe they haven't fired as many rounds in their life as the average yank, or tried as many weapons, but any respectable army sure as hell are better trained, equipped and prepared than a civillian.

Derail aside, I would raid a pharmacy for pretty much everything I'd find. Then I'd raid the local outdoor shop for guns, ammo, knifes, clothing, a map and fishing poles. I'd then find an offroad vehicle, steal a shitload of gas from other cars. Then I'd look for an island big enough to have a supermarket and land for cattle and farming. I'd drive there, get a boat, get on the island, kill all the zombies there, go to the supermarket and remove all the perishable stuff (meat, milk, fruit whatever) and burn it. I'd transform a suitable house into a compound (or maybe even move into the supermarket) and I'd be set for years.
