Okay i am sorry i know this is a major newb question...can someone please explain what you mean by snare on the 1 or snare on the 2 and the 4?

There are four beats in a bar mate. Snare on 1, or 2, or 3 means exactly that. Snare on the 1st,2nd or 3rd beat of the bar. Normally with dubstep the kick goes on beat 1 and the snare goes on beat 3.

k im sorry bear with me..i just dont know how to apply this concept. i am using ableton live 8 as my DAW.

Zoom in on the timeline. If you zoomed in on the 10th bar for example, it'd say 10, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 11, 11.2, etc.

Each one is a beat. So if you wanted to make the typical dubstep pattern, you'd put a kick drum on 10, and a snare on 10.3

Is that what you were asking?

Does anyone else forget that this shit isn't second nature all the time? This is almost as bad as "what's the difference between the white keys and the black keys."


I want more heavily syncopated dubstep, that's what this thread SHOULD be about, creating syncopation.

I write my songs at 280 bpm :6:

I don't really need to restate everything that's already been said, but I usually keep my tempo under 100... One because It's easier for me to change the swing of the beat, but also because I started out on hip-hop and IDM beats, and recorded all my samples that way, so my logic sample library is set up for 70/80/90 bpm etc. As far as syncopating, I don't use it too much (I know, strange being on a dubstep forum), but I don't really see a need to be any more precise than 1/92 notes...

Repeatedly count '1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,' etc

Tap your thumb on the 1 and 3 and your index on the 2 and 4. That's basically a standard 2-step rhythm.

Now start counting again in the same tempo, except this time, tap with your thumb on the 1 and your index on the 3. This is half-step. Imagine your thumb being a kick and your index being a snare.
