Although the mix starts off a little slow, I do think it's a fitting start: "Crucified (XDB edit" is a pretty killer tune. Mix meanders on for a few tracks and then becomes more aggressive and floor oriented with a section of STL - Karenn - 2562 - Joy O & Boddika. Although these are all great tracks, and the mixing is pretty precise, I felt a little bit disappointed with this section, I guess it was a bit too dark or techno inspired for me. We stay in the zone for another three tracks or so, but then it really starts to become interesting as there's more tempo switches, space and sub bass!
The section starting with Objekt's "Cactus" all the way up to Bok Bok's "Silo" (pretty much the rest of the mix) is absolutely great! Stand out tracks are Champion's "Sensitivity", Elgato's "Dunkel Jam" and of course, Pangaea's "Hex". I really would like to know the composer of the track "Curbside", another total gem. The mixing in this section is very very tight.
Which brings us to the ending :
I think Bok Bok's tune is a bit out of place at that place and time in the mix, I was expecting another jolt to come after that one, but that didn't happen. The mix ends a bit on a false note for me:
I agree that it is probably a fitting end, an outro so to say, but both Pearson Sounds remix as well as the noisy track by Andrew Coltrane don't really cut it for me. The mix tries to end on a brighter/nostalgic note with "Escape before the rain"...not my cup of tea. I've heard more exciting songs in the same style and genre.
But these are minor setbacks really, the central section of the mix is totally awesome and worth every penny!

yeah, the ending didn't do it for me either. dont like the sicko cell remix, and that andrew coltrane... i mean, wtf is that? it's scarcely even music.
all in all it's a great CD, but it's nowhere near as good as his Trilogy Tapes cassette.

music is sound and silence organized through time mate... it is definitely music, noise music.
though i would not listen to it on its own (i love noise music in general though) i think this track works very well in the context of this mix... but as i said i love that gloomy ending. i also like that techno segment (stl - dark energy is such a tune... that laidback melody gets me everytime), so to each their own i guess!

thankyou for the philosophical definition of what music is but noise "music" is awful. there's nothing good about that track, it's actually difficult to listen to. it screeches and wails and hurts your ears til you abandon the last track of the mix, cos you think "like fuck am i waiting for this to finish for one track".

depends. i happen to think this is beautiful:
but it's considered as "noise"

see, I actually think it is andrew coltrane's point.i cannot know for sure, obviously, so i can only speculate, but i'm pretty sure these artists (prurient is another one, for instance) seek to make music that is physically hard to listen to. might seem bollocks but i think it is interesting conceptually, even though i cannot listen to such tracks on their own. though i think they can work on certain contexts, eg live where this music takes another dimension - never saw andrew coltrane live and do not plan on, but i saw many noise gigs, including russell haswell opening for autechre for instance, and the music actually becomes something else, more like a physical vibration which shakes your whole body -, or in this mix, where it creates a specific mood which, i think, fits the very end of the mix pretty well. it creates a frightening and intense atmosphere which reinforces the beauty of that last track.
now of course, it's all about opinions, and i can see how you could think i'm just chatting nonsense.

I don't think your definition is entirely correct, not trying bitching around but I thinks that a very interestin question.
implying, music is organized sound through time, wouldn't that mean the noise of a car or such is music respectively everything is music (in organized time and place)?
I'm not daring making a definition but I find this very interesting.
and what is sound? just noise or already a melody in the farest sense as tones that relate to eachother in a specific order of time and place ?

that's not nearly as bad as that andrew coltrane track. it isn't particularly difficult to listen to, at the very least it isn't offensive to my ears. i can see how some people would enjoy listening to that. but i can't imagine anyone listening to that andrew coltrane track and thinking "god, this is great!" because it almost hurts to listen to it. But Ben UFO clearly likes it, and people listen to heavy metal so obviously people do enjoy listening to noise.

it is definitely an interesting question. and you're right in saying that definition was not entirely right; i think a more correct definition would be that "music is sound and silence organized through time by an artist". thus the noise of a car in itself is not music per se, but can be if an artist decides to "organize" it in a way, whichever that way may be... if taken to an extreme this definition allows us to understand john cage's 4"33 as music, since it's only organized silence. and anyone can seemingly be an artist in this sense - the term would refer to anyone willing to create music (ie, using the car in a musical way ( ), not for its technical use) -.
i would say that sound is any noise, and that melodies are themselves sounds organized in relation which each other...

but if you try to think about them, there's no real musical differences between andrew coltrane's track and that one... none of them has real "melodies", they both consist in layers of noises. now obviously, there is a difference in execution, and in their concepts: in that yellow swans track beauty is supposed to come out of those layers (and i think it does successfully), while those layers are precisely intended to hurt (i think) in that andrew coltrane. i would not say "god this is great " when listening to this track, but i can see how some people who seek some kind of "physical power" in music would: if it hurts your ear it's definitely got something to it, even though it might not seem agreeable. in any case the track raises interesting questions - it's experimental music, after all -, so i don't think you can just dismiss it as being "awful". i don't know.

Yeah but adding an artist just creates another ontological problem
Adding space to time is essential, because if sound is organized through time but not space (e.g. two different places) it wouldn't be music.
Wikipedia says: "Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence", but I find this very unprecise. It continues with "However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, 'There is no noise, only sound.'", and were back at the beginning of the problem
Btw, really liked the mix, all big tunes! coltrane worked perfectly in that sense even though I would never listen to that on it' own. But I like the aesthetic development throughout.

never meant to make you cry mr. ufo lol
should state for the record that the mix is well worth the money for the bit up until the sicko cell rmx. the ending isn't for me but it still comes highly recommended!
