Watch the clip at the bottom of the page. Why were the IPCC on the scene so quickly?

Initial ballistics tests on the bullet that lodged in a police officer's radio when Mark Duggan died on Thursday night show it was a police issue bullet, the Guardian understands.

The IPCC automatically investigate all fatal shootings involving the police. It's standard procedure.

ooooooooooooooooooohhhh
looks like it went like this:

mark duggan's cousin was murdered a few days before. he's being followed.
during the arrest either: a copper dropped a gun which went off, leading to the bullet in the radio, and then they shot duggan on the ground.
or they shot him and the bullet went through his body and into the radio.
either way, they panicked, found/planted the gun and pretended it was a shoot out.

when everyone gathered outside the police station on saturday to get answers, a 16 year old girl threw something at the police, who then grouped around her and battered her with their shields, sparking off the riot.

once the riot started mob mentality took over and people went wild and did crazy shit

is that actually true or just a rumour of what happened? if so that's really terrible, hope this doesn't spark off all sorts of crazy shit. looks absolutely awful what has been done to the area by a bunch of absolute arseholes. fair enough if you wanna protest but arson is just so appauling, fucking destroyed a massive area of tottenham, fucked up people's shops, houses and cars - how is this any sort of protest against the police. absolute cnuts.

the police and the government only understand unrest and force

im not saying its right, but im saying whats been done is just as effective as say, attacking the police stations and government buildings around the area

either way, its raised a stink about a potential corrupt section of police and has made people angry

this is the expression of that anger, whether its directly expressed against police or by proxy against people

unfortunately thats what rioting is, its the most chaotic element of civilisation (and dont just go 'OH BUT I WOULDN'T CALL THAT CIVILISED')

well the facts so far are:
the police arrested him. he was shot. a police issue bullet was found embedded in a police radio. a gun was found in a sock in his car. people gathered at the police station. a 16 year old girl threw something at the police. they surrounded and hit her with their shields. riot started. people went wild. internet racists had a field day on media comments.

Agree, noam. The only time we've managed to shine a proper light on the Met recently is when they've been put under pressure by rioting or concerted press intrusion (over the phone hacking coverup), it's becoming clearer and clearer that they are, on average, more bent than a night out in Brighton on Mardi Gras.

I do wish people wouldn't smash shit up for the sake of it, especially small businesses and private property, but if you've got to cause a scene to force an investigation into the Met's really pretty dodgy use of lethal force (bloke shot carrying a lighter, Menezes shot when not even a suspect, Ian Tomlinson) and the apparently mandatory coverups and/or fumbling of information... well... maybe you've got to cause the scene.

On a side note, a plod wrote me up for smoking weed in Regents Park the other day whilst having a picnic with friends. First time in about 6 years of never having a problem. So nice to know that the completely fucking useless part of the force is getting more efficient.

i think with this + their involvement in the hacking it's becoming more obvious to people what a joke the met are tbh. and it's not that i dont think something needs to be done to show resistance against the police and whatever but there was a guy on the news whose house had been completely burnt down and i just dont think it's necessary to fuck up innocent peoples lives

necessary is an odd word here... like, i kinda feel it is necessary on first instincts, but that thought needs refining, i agree its not fair, its not right either really... but maybe it is necessary??

not that specific guy, its nothing to do with him, on its own thats obviously shit that his house got burned down

but maybe in some way acts like this really do have a purpose, outside of the initial violence and thoughtlessness that caused them

i suppose the only value gleaned from any of these acts will be realised when its all over and something, if anything at all changes for the better

Loads of links and reports coming up on Twitter.

Not one thing on the BBC site.
Sky News have very little.
