I own the z5500 and mix on them every other day. They get loud/bassy enough for my bedroom (door handles rattle, occasionally something will fall off a shelf).. If I'm playing DMZ or similar weighty plates I find that I have to lower the volume of the subwoofer or it begins to make a weird knocking sound (does anyone know what this is?). So the maximum I usually can run when mixing is about 75% volume on the master volume and about 80-90% on the sub (the subwoofer could technically be pushed to 200%, I set it at default 100% when listening to stuff through my computer)

I bought them brand new for $280au (rrp is $800 in australia but that's an obvious scam)

There are far better speaker systems available but you would need to dish out a bit more money, plus I hook up my computer to it and use optical input for the playstation. with a remote it makes for a good all-round system, plus I'm fairly sure logitech has introduced a new range so you might be able to find some stock being liquidated somewhere cheap.

Another thing that I don't get is that I've been told that brostep is just an Americanized version of what "real" dubstep is. The strange part about that though is that there's plenty of people who produce brostep out of the United Kingdom. I just named one in the paragraph above this.

Hey, go to page one. Look under your original post. He told you what you need to know, if not at least enough information to research something for yourself. There is no need for 20 other people to post the same exact thing.

Dude, this is the SNH, we are pricks. If you come into a off topic muso forum and ask what type of speakers you need to play a specific genre in your own bedroom, then you're going to get some pisstakers... especially if your chosen genre has been ritually abused around here for the last 3 years.

Perhaps you might have been better taking one of your favourite CDs to a hifi shop and seeing which speakers give YOU the best results?

I just bought the Logitech Z-5500 a couple weeks ago and I'm really regretting it. All those great reviews are from people who have no idea what they're talking about, or who use it for gaming more than music. I'm currently waiting on a sub and amp to arrive to go with my old hi fi speakers.

The problems with the Z-5500: for one, like all PC speakers, it has shit all midrange. This is kind of a given. Two: you'd think with that over-sized sub you'd get amazing bass, but nope. Don't expect to hear anything below 50hz with any sort of power, there's no rumble or physicality to it at all. Also, it takes so much power to drive it that you won't hear much bass until you turn the volume way up. So yeah, not worth it for me at least. Then again, I'm judging how it handles shit like Breakage and Mala. Nero's new album sounded pretty crazy on it cos Nero's bass isn't as low and all the loudness is in the higher frequencies, but its not really my taste.

So yeah, like the others said, get some hi-fi speakers. Z-5500s are supposedly the best PC speakers and they're still shit

What is? It's not as if I'm cranking it all the time.. just when I have a mix. Are you saying a better quality speaker at the same volume would cause less hearing damage or something?

Yeah, pretty much. You should run your amps at a maximum of 50-75% really, after that they'll start to distort... you might not notice, but your ears will. Clean sound is muuuuch better for them than unpredictably distorted sound.

grillis - isn`t that wierd knocking sound your sub distorting?
if you drive a sub too hard it will naturally clip as the cone moves.
or am I just talking out of my darkness?
