Sorry you guys are fucking jokes.

Texas executed a man last night and none of you are up in arms about it? This man tied a black man to the back of his pick up truck and drug him for miles. Along the way he was so brutally hurt that his arms, legs, and eventually his head popped off of his body. When he was found there was nothing more than a torso. But you guys aren't up in arms about that right?

Troy Davis has been on death row for years and none of you gave a shit until it got its 6 minutes of coverage on the news. People are executed all the time but because this one got news coverage you're all instant activists

You can't expect to change shit when you only care the last 24 hours of a mans life.

Sooooo fucking typical and so fucking nauseating to see this fake ass outrage.

the difference between that man being dragged and troy is the fact that it's more than likely that troy is innocent

Perhaps if all the people upset about Troy Davis the day before he died cared the months and years before he died legit change could have happened.

maybe so but a lot of people don't have the time in the day to search 'potential innocent man on death row' and sadly have to wait till news coverage to find out.

this is that same as the 'you're priks for mourning winehouse when x amount of soldiers have died' yeah, lots of shit goes on all the time- doesn't mean you shouldn't be pissed off when something else bad happens.

and people living in different countries are not likely to hear about every case in the usa or other countries all of the time, you hear about it when it becomes a bigger story (like a guy actually getting put to death when the evidence is thin).

shit- my brother is just about to go to court for 'damaging police property' for spitting on a cell door (then cleaning it off when told to), why aren't you here sticking up for him and complaining about police abusing their powers?

because I don't think thats an abuse of police power... i think its your brother being a dumbass

point being, amnesty international is a 24/7 365 day a year organization that you can get invovled with if these issues mean something to you.

sadly a lot of people dont care until they're told to care

well you must live wanting for some sort of fascist state- £500 'cleaning' fine and a lifetime criminal record (no travel to lots of places abroad, reduced job prospects etc) for something that caused no damage at all- didn't even do it to anyone- they watched on CCTV. anyway, you know what point im making, no point trying to find a new argument- you aren't helping out every injustice around the world, doesn't mean that you would be wrong to be pissed off about one once its bought to your attention.

And while the case of Laurence Brewer is much less sympathetic it doesn't make the death penalty any less wrong in the eyes of those that take a principled position against the state killing individuals. People do not need to be activists to express concerns with the death penalty on principle and with this killing specifically?

As for caring about the last 24 hours of a mans life it's hard to care about the rest while ignorant of it, I don't know what your point is other than taking a position that people who are not US Citizens expressing an opinion about US issues is wrong?

If we expressed outrage every time your country debased itself in this way it'd be lost like a boy crying wolf, we haven't got the stomach to hear about every killer you "correct" by killing... every now and again, you do something bad enough it captures some imagination... if you're going to stick to medieval policies like capital punishment AND be part of the global community, you're going to have to put up with a few tuts every now and again.

You can infer an implicit moral disgust from us every time you murder a murderer from the mere fact that we got rid of the shit half a century ago. The rest of the enlightened world has been leading by example, perhaps just once the "New" World might listen rather than sticking its fingers in its ears and doling out yet more tired excuses for why they get such a kick out of revenge killing.

"La la la, I CAN'T HEAR YOU, HE WAS A BAD BAD MAN, WE HAD TO KILL HIM TO MAKE WHAT HE DID HAVE NOT HAPPENED OR SOMETHING... HAHA, WATCH HIS EYES POPP!!!"

You know - this may sound kind of strange...someone help me with this one...

OK - I'm from the North East - which is full to the brim with people...
and when I went to Texas...something happened...something that I could feel in my skin...

It was the lack of people and huge expanses of wilderness...

and I think that - In places like that - where law means very little - and the natural world dominates...

To let a killer live - is like giving him another chance to kill you...

Whereas at the same time...I think of someone coming from a place like that..into society
having to now absorb and function under a learned set of laws..
can't really be held responsible - in the same way - for failing to grasp it...

I guess what I am saying is - that I'm not surprized that Texas executes people left and right...
When you can actually feel the lawlessness in the land...

It's the wild, wild west...

Go to the grand canyon and hike some of the ancient indian settlements...

The first thing you'll notice is how strategically they are hidden and built...

Places high with incredible visability..that can only be accessed by a sigular and precarious passageway..

You go and make some sense for 2 posts, but then just gotta add the third one dont'cha!

(but yeah I get what you mean, places that are a long way from big populations can be lawless therefore need tough preventative laws.....lots of sparcely populated places that do alright without the death penalty though)

Yep to that! I don't believe a land can carry an atmosphere in itself... it's created by the people. The 'narratives' of certain states seem to celebrate violence, retribution and even, quietly, vigilantism... I can totally understand why the atmosphere exists, I do wonder why it takes so long to disappear. Britain had just as barbarous a reputation and 'atmosphere' for a lot of its existence, but along with most of the rest of the planet (and some of the States), kicked itself into respectability for the 20th Century.... up until 140 years ago we still crowded the gallows to watch hangings for crimes as meagre as a child stealing. People as base, visceral, uncomplicated beasts LOVE a bit of violence whether it be cock-fighting, bareknuckle boxing or gang-rape... it's an effective society's job to try and keep those urges within the realms of decency.

Given that our (and your) prisons are more than capable of keeping a man locked up for life, the permanent separation argument makes no sense... the only positive reasons to accept capital punishment are to save money and to provide a tiny share in the thrill of killing to the members of society that wish to experience it. I'm not sure either motivations are worth even the most wretched human life.
