So I actually use mine as a midi controller in Ableton. I record all my drums using samples I house in Ableton but using the pads and also the brain of the MPC.
This new MPC seems to do exactly this. The brain of an MPC with the ease of using samples within a DAW. May be wrong but thats what it looks like to me.
No, you're about right mate.
Shame about the 2000 and the pixels. Screen replacements are pretty easy if you or someone you know can solder. I know a place in Coventry in the UK, and a place in London that can sort that screen out for less than £100. Failing that you've always got Forat.
Or ... sell it to me and buy a Maschine :p I actually collect early MPC's because eventually they will disappear and whilst others like collecting stamps I collect vintage hardware from the hip hop and early electronic era.
Wow cheers GV1 didn't even know about Forat. I have thought about replacing the screen....but I wouldn't want to do anything that might damaging it further. It works full now and I can use to some degree so i've stuck with that! Would ideally love to get my hands on an MPC60. Always on the scout for one on eBay if one comes up at a good price.
If you want to make e an offer on my MPC your welcome to! I can send pic's etc if needed... It's 2nd hand and came in a flight case where it remains when not in use.

These new Akai products are controllers that should work with your DAW or Akais own DAW.
But, to answer the question, NO a DAW is not better than hardware in every way.

I`d say the ease of beat production with an MPC is hard to beat.

Yeah man. When I spoke to Forat about my MPC60 when I blew the fuse he told me what fuse I need and even told me how to replace it. He didn't ask for a penny for his time!

did the same with me... i sent my mpc to sum akai service center and he told me it was a mistake, and that he could fix it quickly.. he asked me if i had a soldering tool i told him i didnt he said, "then i could fix it but if u have a friend who has one tell him to call me"
i was so fed up i sent it to him... 3 different akai engineers told me the unit was fucked and that i had to buy a new cpu board for over 500 bucks ... over 300 in shipping and stuff... i shopped for cpu boards and he gave me advice on which one looked fine... but at the last moment he told me he wanted to get my unit cause he was pretty sure i was not forced to shell out that amount of money for it to be repaired...
he very nicely told me it would be a pleasure.. i didnt feel pressured by some businessman... he calculated the cheapest safest shipping method, picked it up at the post office, recieved it, and the day after,he called me "its repaired". and he was playing one of my beats of the zip disk i had left in...
then he told me waht was wrong with it iho... and how much it would cost to repair.. he even dissuaded me to get his output boost mod because "for the needs i was describing it was kindof an overkill", he replaced the pads, and the screen for a minimal cost... and sent it back quickly, called me to know if i had recieved it and was VERY nice
truly a don.
true story

I'm glad I came across this thread. I agree with the sentiment being expressed by a few people here that Akai is trying to conceal the fact that the Renaissance's functionality is highly dependent on the computer system. Doesn't make it a bad product at all, it just shouldn't be viewed in the same category of the original MPC line. I thought that this could be used as a standalone unit, but it cannot. I guess the only way to realize a system like that would be to pair it with a cheap laptop. That might actually work pretty well...
