When you feel uninspired, go back an listen to the type of music you like that isn't edm. Don't try to analyze it or anything just listen to it as a consumer not as a producer and appreciate it. For me listening to sax jazz just gets my mind racing try to figure out how to implement different elements into dubstep try it out

^ I've played jazz guitar for around 7 years, so I obviously love jazz. I LOVE to sample old jazz tunes, some horn solos just provide a divine amount of awesomeness to some tracks

Has nothing to do with your computer. I produce everything on a toshiba laptop I paid 300 dollars for. I also pretty much only use Freeware. I own a few synths that I picked up on sale for like 20-30 dollars just for the hell of it. It's not what you're using, it's how you're using it.

Sounds to me like you are trying to force something good to come out. You can't force creativity and inspiration. The more you try the more frustrated you will get, and you'll never be happy with the outcome.

As far as your lack of desire to get a dead end job goes,I would find a waiting job man. I make anywhere from $100-250 a night waiting tables. It's the best paying job you're likely to get without going to some sort of trade school (barring djing) or without a degree.

To long didn't read the whole thread but basing on your tune you linked...

Wheres the vibes, the energy, the thing making me want to listen to more than 5 seconds?

Structure, good quality sounds?

Seriously; i'm 6-7 years deep in this and still am not making perfect music - do what feel right - you don't have to conform and use shitty wobbles to make good quality music what will get people listening to it; you also shouldn't "want to make a career" out of music because "its your life".

Its not your life - its a passion you wouldn't mind getting paid for.. Have fun with it while you're not getting paid for it and maybe eventually - you'll get there.

I think the main advice to give about this whole situation is man up, make music for fun and stop glory hunting.

I can't believe you would put your inability to make good tunes down to the fact that you've got a new computer or this:

7 months? Go put some hard work in and come back in 7 years.
I listened to your tune in the first post. It sounds like you've been producing for 7 months. That's not a diss.

No, he came here looking for a shortcut.

Producing music should be fun, chill out about making amazing tracks for now and concentrate on something like sound design for a while, just build patches and save them, learn a few techniques and eventually you'll hit on an idea but there's no point in forcing it.

no-one is hating, facts are facts
either he accepts that it is a labor of love or not
but the topic he is discussing has been rehashed on this forum 2000x
music is not affected by a good pc, smoking dope or being cool
if the op doesn`t realize that yet then he needs to stop a review his reasons
even when you battle you should see it as an opportunity to learn

Yeah I kind of do that with music I listen too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah that was my point to myself pretty much. It doesn't matter how good/shitty your computer is. It really is based on the person making the tunes. It's kind of helping though cuz of RAM/mixing. Pretty much it though.

Haha I won't. Thanks for the moral support though.

Yeah that was actually what I was going to do but I don't have a car... My mom has been a waitress for about 10 years now. So I know a lot about it and the good pay.

Yeah I understand but I never stuck with any goals before and I actually want to make things happen for once/not let the people around me down. :u:

Well the tune I posted was the first dubstep tune I made back in June 2011. Then the one in my sig is from December 2011. Just to clear things up.

I guess you can say I'm looking for a shortcut because a lot of you guys are more experienced than me so tips would be great. It's not like you're going to come to my house and produce for me. Shouldn't be that bad. :i:

Honestly, from the bottom of my heart... There is no tips apart from doing it.

When you learn guitar you still have to get your fingers to work with your mind innit?

Its the same with production, you learn what goes with what, how to build patches, how to carry a vibe and how to structure your tunes by just trial and error.

Learn music theory, understand how subtractive synthesis works and get on it every day you can. Thats the best advice anyone can give; theres no top gear top tip.

i actually disagree with not making finished tracks. I think its really important to see it all the way through. Just like playing in a band.you are trying to make a piece of music, not make a particular sound.

its funny how people get so obsessed with mid/lead basses as if they are going to stumble upon the next "Cinema" drop, yet they pay such little attention to alllllll the other factors in a track and get discouraged.

if you havent been at it for a few years, dont be obsessed with lead bass sounds... yes its very important, but so are drums, sampling, melody, ambience, transitions, etc etc

i totally agree about learning what you can about music theory, learn a bit by bit and try to practice it. also spend a lot more time making melodies and chords fit together and then make them progress into variations of the same melody, keep practising that and for now mainly use basic synths that sound good like charlatan or 3xosc (if u have FL) just so you are forced to make good sounds with just sine and saw waves + filters.. you will learn a lot doing this, even if your at an advanced level.
dont give up and make a new project too much, make a melody that sounds good to you and keep spending hours/days building it up!
trying all these things eliminated my writers block before and now i always feel comfortable making melodies and making them flow, and this is coming from someone who doesnt own a midi keyboard :6:
also i agree with anne droid, idc about getting ripped on this BUT i do rate skrillex.. not for his basses, i really like the melodies and themes of some of his songs and it totally just sounds like days & weeks were put into some of his intros. everyone works differently i guess.. i dont have trouble making abstract intros with a bunch of timestretching, delays and droning reverbs. however when it comes to melodic intros in a lot of detail.. its hard work and people dont realise that the intro of some of these brostep songs probably took longer than the basses being made + chopped around.
just my opinion i guess.
