Also, I recommend City on Fire if only to see where Tarantino got his ideas from for Reservoir Dogs - it concentrates a lot more on the 'Mr Orange' character, and his relationship with 'Mr White'. Worth a watch.

Wolf89 mentioned City on Fire in the Overrated Movies thread, I'm gonna check it out. As I mentioned in there though, it seems both are inspired by Kubrick's The Killing from around 1955 or so. I think that was based on a book IIRC. All 3 seem to have very similar plots and scenes.

Haven't seen The Killer since I watched it after that album came out. I did like it but I'm not much into action films so haven't rewatched it since. It's back on my rewatch list now though.

I was gonna say, other than perhaps In the Mood For Love this is the most acclaimed film of this century and rightly so.

that frankly aren't particularly good, but I think amongst fans of the styles there are people that should enjoy them

Prodigal Son (love the Wing Chun crazyness in this)
The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue/Let Sleeping Corpses Lie
A Blade In The Dark (Later Giallo but has something I really like about it)
Death Trap (Tobe Hooper get's horrible atmospheres good I'd say)
Master Of The Flying Guillotine (so fucking stupid but so much fun, clearly ripped in one part of Kill Bill too)
Maniac Cop
Zombi 3/Zombie Flesh Eaters 2 (yeah Zombie Flesh Eaters/Zombie/Zombi 2 is accepted as a classic of zombie horror/Italian gore but this is actually a really fun movie too)
The Exterminator (exploitation classic but how many of you have seen it?)

ALSO, The Godfather part 3 - that is underrated. Overshadowed by the other two but a very good film in it's own right.

not sure if its really underrated, as it often sneaks into critics top 10's. but i think Chinatown is the best film i've ever seen. has it all.

just not sure that most people are into the film noir thing. also the sequel is shit, should have been amazing but polanksi went and fucked it up for everyone else!

Not the first movie that would spring to my mind though

If anything, Lynch is a bit overrated.

His films are good, often full of evil overtones and thinking material, but I often get the feeling he doesn't really know what he's doing, or where he's going with it. Surrealism is good for lightly pinching the soul, but it can also be boring wank, Inland Empire as an example.

Lynch is brilliant. I quite like that he might not know where he's going with things. It's certainly preferable to somebody knowing where they're going with something and where they're going with it not being worth going to.

Agreed on Inland Empire. Left me cold (in a bad way). It'd also have been better if it hadn't been filmed digitally. Felt like a student film.

He's more hit than miss.

It makes sense after repeated viewings, but the best thing about Lynch films is that they can often make different sense to different people. He seems to live by Goddard's code of 'movies
need to have a beginning middle and end, just not always in that order'.

Inland Empire is maybe his 'worst', I agree. I stil enjoyed it because it was creepy (laura dern screamface) and retained the Lynch feeling of illusion. They shot that film without a script so that's why it feels a bit aimless. It's a bit of an experiment. I agree DV looks crap, and he said he wouldn't use film any more. I hope that's not true.

Him and his daughter made a film a couple of years ago called Surveillance. It flopped, but Showtime plays it sometimes. It was pretty underrated and had no distribution really. I enjoyed it enough to keep it on the DVR for over a year so far.

Wow. Was just scrolling through the satellite channel guide earlier and The Killing just started. MGMHD is showing it right now, and again on the 18th and 20th. The HD transfer looks quite nice too for 50s B&W. Not sure if you get that but thought I'd mention in case. This seems to happen every time I talk about specific films, I see it airing later.
