Picture an image or scenario in your head and write what you think the background music for said image/scenario would sound like. Look at film scores and video game music.

Banjo Kazooie is an amazing example of this. It's the same exact song; but the "mood" changes depending on which level you're near. Same with Majora's Mask and the various themes.
