Honestly, I've never heard good things about the place and don't want to risk looking at something that is potentially dodgy/unsavoury whilst at work.

most of those boards get some shit threads some of the time, but they're often really good. I stay the fuck clear of /pol/ , /b/ and shit like /r9k/ (politics, random, robot9001 whatever the fuck that is) , as well as all the anime and vidya shit just because i don't like anime or video games at all

you won't see anything unsavory at all on the front page. It's just a basic webpage. Nothing bad happens until you jump into one of the unsavory boards. some nsfw are mad decent, too, like /s/.

I must say i really like the overall format of 4chan, and some of the humor is magnificent

But like Today said, the funny pictures and that are not really what its about; I frequent subforums like /indiegaming /battlestations (computer set ups, some studio stuff on there too) and a few others.. The only reason the 'funny' pictures are at the forefront of these websites is because 90% of people turn into a e-thug with incredibly childish sense of humor soon as they open Chrome.
