& I was in your quandary about value without excessive cost

the local vinyl shop had imported a bunch of Audio Technicas suited to anything
they have good level of speed/switching/weighting controls without being obsessive
I'm very happy with it...cost about $400
(but our prices are ridiculous compared to yours, so I'd think around 120 quid there)
rigged it up to an old (1968?) Sansui valve amp which I had reconditioned for $50,
& new, good quality but not too-compact speakers ($400)
(after being disuaded from investing in snazzy old ones - big bucks for good condition)
fitted some new lengths of cable
and it's fine apart from the real low end at above 5 volume, which the amp can't handle too well

up to now I've spent about $880
eventually I'll get an amp that can hold lofreqs better + a sub

Warning, once you've got it, you'll be buying heaps more vinyl.

oh yeah, I've hooked up stand-alone cassette & CD players to the amp too.

and yeah the old jazz I'm also collecting, sounds better than anything else apart from Tolerance's Chamber of Secrets
Nice one - that was loads of help! I'll need to scope out amps as well... but you've just reminded me my Dad's got a gorgeous old valve thing sitting at home that I might be able to resurrect with a bit of TLC.

I think I'm probably going to go for Technics - just the one to start with unless I see a really tasty deal. Seems like the best balance of performance and future proofing. I know that once I start collecting vinyl I'm going to find it hard not to buy modern stuff to mix with and I'll end up finding myself pretending to be Jazzy Jeff... I've learnt it's best to be prepared for my whims.

Ninjas - you are wonderful people. :Q: :w:

If you are looking for amps the NAD 326bee is really good, also the Cambridge Audio A5. Both are really unfussy just basic EQ controls really but they both sound great!

I second the NAD, but whole hearted disagree the the Camb Audio, think its shit.

Get any of the NAD range second hand off ebay/ new if u got the doh
Get B&W bookshelfs/ floorstanders.
For decks, Pikeymobile's mate is selling a nice pair of technics, I have tagged u in on facebook mate, worth a look

serato is really easy to do some cool shit really quick. honestly only used it once myself, but it's my favorite thing i've done ever.

what's wrong with seeing how a 'vinyl' jay-z or whoever sounds over your track?

the vinyl and digital thing doesn't matter to me. sometimes sound is taped, sometimes it's 'vinyl", sometimes it's synthesized. it's all how the creative workflow can be maximized right? having the ability to do all of everything is what i want.

sorry i'm drunk, and i want to make music right now but this feels good to get out. (jizz)

Technics are so good they put themselves out of business, deck for life= no repeat customers and a strong 2nd hand market.

If it's purely for listening and you never see it being used for djing I have got genuinely good turntables from this second hand hi fi store (literally sells nothing else apart from hi-fis and records) for not much cash so honestly second hand I think will honestly be the way to go as unless you're willing to part with serious money a new turntable for the same price will probably be pretty rubbish.
Honestly Wolf?

Mags, buy 2 technics if you get the chance even if you aint gonna mix... the 'no down time, BANG THAT CROSSFADER' is worth the extra ~£200  :W:

i just bought a pair of technics for $175. they both need a new tonearm. i'll most likely part them out and keep a few pieces. i'm sitting on 5 or 6 mk2s in various stages of repair/rebuild. if you go the ebay route beware that the average bloke has no idea how to properly package a turntable for shipping, and there is a very good chance your decks will arrive with a bent tonearm, or broken spindle.

if anyone needs any parts hit me up.

Haha yeah I feel I should buy a replacement needle for my other deck for that reason.

I bought some setup for £40, they play records so that's all the matters, ill stick to mp3 for any dj dreaming!
