It's best to have a negative relationship with the velocity/panning, so the lighter the hit the wider the panning, keeping the 'louder' hits more central.
Or as a variation, use the velocity to control the wet level of a panning VST, like Panomatic (or whatever it's called) in FL Studio.

Make sure you get a percussion samplepack that has each hit recorded least 3 different times with different velocities (e.g. one really soft hit, one hard and one really hard). Then, after you have your notes/pattern laid out, play around with the velocity of each hit. You can also try recording the patterns with a midi keyboard.
Actually adding some subtle eq modulation(can also be done with à wow filter, just make sure you turn the dry/wet and resonance down) can spice it up à bit and make it more alive.
