Yea. I guess the point isn't about how many notes, but somehow I still feel like I'm just really bored with arrangements. Even with percussion. It's like...it's beat oriented music, can you do something interesting with percussion PLEASE.
I can dig what Eno is saying, you can make one sustained not interesting, but a lot of producers aren't doing anything like that IMO. I'm sure someone could show me examples of people that are, but there are probably more examples of people not pulling it off.
+1 for BT though. I love some fucking guitar pedals...live knob twisting > drawing in automation or LFOs (though both those have their place).
I guess I feel like experimentation isn't rewarded by fans/DJs/the industry, only by SOME producers.
I'm sure 99% of you will have no fucking clue what I'm talking about here, but I'll say it anyway. I dig this country artist Ray Wiley Hubbard. He has been around since Jesus played the banjo. He is probably most famous for Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother. Recently he put out an album called A: Enlightenment, B: Endarkenment (Hint there is no C). People fucking flipped out because they saw it as this HUGE departure from a lot of what he'd done in the past and totally abandoned him. Meanwhile there were people that realized, dude...the guys an artist...what kind of douche would he be if he just made Redneck Mother over and over again for 40 years. The kind of douche that hangs himself in a cheap motel because he hates his stupid fans.
tl:dr ????
I guess I just wish people wanted to just make music and see what boundaries they could push instead of being a bunch of #yoloswag ghetto smurf tnucs.

I think he means more the pitch aspect of a note, not how regularly it occurs?

Yeah I don't mean just play one single note and holding it I'm talking about a bassline which is only on one single pitch.
But, to say that a one note bass being held out for a long period of time can't have any groove, is purely wrong. Have you forgotten about the WOBBLE BASS? So much old school dubstep does that. Groove doesn't come from bassline alone, either.
I still maintain the position that a lot of you are looking at this subject from a very limited standpoint.

there's loads of good electronic music, the further away you get from 'dance' music the better

LOL why did that make you so upset? Are you ok? It's not important to whom I was responding; my point still stands.

I just wanted to piggyback this thread real quick to ask:
I can't be the only one who's totally sick and tired of hearing a tapestop at the end of every 4 measures? can I?
it used to be a good way to add interest... but now that everyone and their mother is doing it, I consider it a breath of fresh air when they don't do it.

I don't mind if you think my taste in music is shitty... My taste in music, I'd like to think, is really broad... so yes, there is likely to be some music that others would consider shitty included. But... Really? You base this on the fact that I'm tired of hearing tapestops? How does one come to this conclusion... I'm seriously asking.

Pretty simple.
If it's gotten to the point were you think "it a breath of fresh air when they don't do it." then you sure are listening to alot of music with tapestops. The only music I have heard them in recently is shitty top 40's chart, and the whole American EDM movement i.e. shit music. I try to avoid that stuff as much as I can, so I don't have your problem of being tired of them.
I was original going to post, "I feel sorry for you and your lack of soul" because it's an old movie quote, but I thought it would be to harsh. It wasn't really that serious of a comment anyway, I'm sure you have read some of my other post on here

Gotta love the logical reasoning behind that lol
A) You said you've been hearing a lot of tape stops
B) Lately I've only heard tape stops in the top 40 and the "American EDM movement," both of which I consider shit
C) Therefore, it follows that you must only be listening to the top 40 and the "American EDM movement," and since I consider it shit, you listen to shit music
Yes.. totally logical.

A) I said "heard", not "listening"
B) Go fuck a pinecone

ROFL.
Honestly, though... I kind of see his point. I think a lot (read: 90%) of the chart toppers are bad. Partially for the same reason as the tape stop thing. The top 40 and the "American EDM movement," likes to act like an incestuous copycat. Any time an idea is used by one artist and it is received well by the mainstream all of the other artists begin to whore it out, it seems. But, I listen to the crap because I want to find that occasional gem that sometimes emerges. I also want to glean some kind of insight into what is being whored out to death to actively avoid replicating it, and very rarely to sometimes get inspired by something I actually liked. I don't think it's a fair conclusion to say that my taste in music is shit because 20% of the music I hear is shit. Especially when I'm sitting here saying I think it's shit...

ONLY WTF
You listen to 20% shit music, and you know it
