I have always said that Reason is probably the best for a nood because it gives a good understanding of both software and hardware. It's a very user friendly and easy to learn on. Don't want to start any arguments but once you have put a year or so in, change to a IMO better DAW like Ableton, Cubase or logic. Its worth it just for the freedom of using VSTs.
After using all 3 of the above I would recommend Ableton, I love everything about it.

^ I do not think Reason is noob-friendly at all and not sure if you knew this but I think the newest version of Reason supports VSTs.

Lies... I'm pretty sure reason supports it's own in house "rack extensions" sometimes made by 3rd party company's. There is still no VST support as far as I know.
Not user friendly??? compared to Logic and Cubase, Reason is a kids toy.

The new reason doesnt support vst per-se. But it allows you to rewire any external midi instrument to it. Im assuming it only works with vsts that have a standalone applications, like any NI stuff.

i agree with bassbum. i started with reason and it definitely gave me a good understanding about signal flow and how hardware should work. i have now since switched to logic and cant comment on which would have been easier to start on but im glad i started with reason i can say that. also, its nice to be limited to no vst's because with reason you pretty much use what your given and make the most of it.
plus then if the op does switch daws in a year or two, reason is always great to have to rewire into logic or ableton. if i had to pick 3 daws to live with it would definitely be reason, ableton, and logic.
