mcin to do dubstep is defo all about hostin.. ive never been a fan of shoutin over any music especially once the mc starts to take over the music - ive witnessed too many ruined sets by over zealous mcs.. they make you wanna leave pure n simple..

mcs are real important in the dance cos they can bridge the gap between dj and crowd, and like alex said they add a particular energy which is be essential for keepin a dance alive..

and lets face it if you got a tunes rollin and an mc is flowin smooth the rave just bumps up a gear

pokes is the fella cos he keeps it to the essentials and always appears if theres a lull just to bring things back up.. crazy d is good and i love the fact he can natter some complete bollocks (though hes guilty of always sayin the same stuff).. and space ape is real good cos hes actually got somethin to say.. gotta be said though, if you like it dirt its all about slt mob!

I'm pretty indifferent to it really, but I definately think it's an unnecessary addition to the sound, and seeing as dubstep developed a reputation for being stripped down and bare, it seems a little pointless.

Dubstep takes me to a different kinda place, another level. Sounds cheesy but it really does! And having someone bawling "RELOOOOOOOOAD RUDEBWOOOOOY" in my face just brings me crashing back down again.

I am getting stressed out listening to fast staccato mcing and it is even more annoying when the volume level isnt set up proberly or Mcs starting kind of a battle over a mix.

But I think some mellow mcing or vocals flavoured with use of delays and feedbackloops would work good over a dubstep mix. I always wondered why dnb mc used delays like guitar stompboxes so rarely.

you're not alone tho Alex, I dont understand the anti-grime / anti-mc crew, not lookin t start an argumet like . . . t each der own. Ive been lovin Kode9s use of crunk in the mix . . . the tension created by contrasting the (over)hype vocals, with deep instrumentals is amazing.

I think mcs are deff. essential, & echo the sentiment that the reggae / dancehall tradition is prob. alot more fecund than dnb or ' ' rave ' ' mcs.

yeah kode playing crunk has been the most exciting thing in a dubstep mix for me for ages. like you say its all about the contrasts. and like kode9 said somewhere its all about the mix, the point where two things cross over to make a new third thin that is temporary. just synergy

I think you hit the nail on the head, drum and bass got really boring when it was just about the mc led battle for the mic between X number of mcs on stage i think listening to any helter skelter tape pack circa 2000 - 2003 with skiba, shabba, det, fats and who ever else could be squeezed on the stage at the time gunning for the microphone in a contest like sitaution takes away from any musical content. I dont want to seem like im hating on the drum and bass mcs the good ones do there jobs well but the amount of small d and b nights i have been to hosted by the worst local mcs makes it to hard to handle. A man like space ape is great he adds a kind of mysticism to the music which is all good by me, crazy d got a great style as well i think you could be miles away from a dance and you hear that wo wo woooo and you know theres dubstep going on and pokes deffiently knows when to add a vocal and when to let the music speak if there where to be dubstep mcs they should have to be educated by these guys like apprentices or something thats an awesome idea for a tv show.

me personally i think they work well wit each other and bounce thier differnt stlyes well


aint heard many dubstep mc's

crazy d - think his quiet good kind of gq stylke minimal but affective

dmz's mc heard him at fwd didnt really hear much so cant make a fair comment on him tbh

but vicious and dangerous are probly the the more lively mcs ive heard in dubstep

ill have to keep and ear open for some more

We constantly have these stoopid debates about Dubstep Mcs and then jus to make it even more stupid the FIRST MCs to do Dubstep aint mentioned!!?? I know we had Roller MC and Juiceman as well, but they couldnt really test Vicious and Dangerous

They smacked up Herbal the other month and they sound sicker than most over these beats (probably because they build sick riddims as well- other dubstep MCs just MC and that's it- VIC and Dangerous are TRULY unique)

I like my MCs 'road' and Vicious and Dangerous satisfy my needs everytime.

Crazy D is wicked, real smooth- goes well with the music, easy to digest

Pokes is a Consolidator- got a good voice. Heard some pretty powerful moments with him on mic jus backin tings up.

Space Ape is a poet who seems to 'own' tunes when he talks.

Beyond these lot I aint heard nuttin that's impressed me much. But Mcs are always an aspect of most music that comes out of Londinium so more Mcs should come through (and not jus MCs with big names and no understanding of the music)

I love Mcs but not jus any MCs. When the time's right and the talent's there we'll blatantly have more of them in dubstep. Nothin's essential other than good music, good music will attract the right mic-mans.

mc'in goes under the same principles as the music itself=====if it sounds good and is in the right place and maybe says something that makes sense you like it====on the other hand when your off your fuckin tree and some nob wont stop mumblin how hes gonna smash your head to the pavement, your like i'm gonna stab this tnuc if he doesnt shut the fuck up cos hes spoilin me buzzz. me and my m8's all used to buy the tapes from the raves we went to as youths and we used to know all the words of mc nats and jd walker ect.. and we loved it. but like i said its all about the placement.....
