I signed up here to comment on this, rather than just lingering in the background....

I thought I was going to get ripped to pieces on this one, but I'm suprised that the response has actually been quite reasonable.

I can totally understant why people who hate it hate it..

I knew I was going into dangerous territory on this one, but I love the original and just wanted to make an edit I could play out. I love what he has done to the Ray J vocals on this and wanted to be able to put them into my set.

The re-edit is simple, it is just a kick drum, a chopped up Lyn Collins break and a 808 Bass drum bass line over an edit of the original track. It was never meant to be a proper remix, just a tool. So those people claiming it sounds like I didnt put in much effort, well, your right. I just wanted to put in some simple elements that would make it playable for me and my friends in our sets, with the type of music we play. I didnt want to add anything flashy because at the end of the day I wanted the vocals to come through.

I should never have given it to Mad Decent to Blog, it seems to have spread a bit!... Kept it to me and my friends.

Anyway I know most people on here are going to hate it, but just wanted to say something in my defense. If defense is possible.

Like the man said, a simple remix like loads of others (Coldplay ones spring to mind) to let DJs use the vocals in their mixes. I wish more DJs just ran the tunes like Burial they want to use from the edge though...it the tune's good enough the crowd aren't going to lynch you if you head off for a brief while away from the temp they're used to.

Thats fair enough nothing wrong with having your own edits i think my comment was more to do with what constitutes a remix.

I think maybe we all get a bit on the defensive when it comes to Burial he seems to be our token idol that chooses not to have his own voice on the forum so we police it for him if that makes the slightest amount of sense, i have eaten alot of cake today.

I'd love to, but it just doesnt fit in my sets. I play across the board house music from Jackin stuff to techier stuff to Baltimore to the odd 2 Step or Bassline track blah blah blah etc etc .

Sadly not everyone in the world is up on Burial and the original would probably kill the flow of a set at most clubs... I'm sorry to say.

I'd love to be able to play music I personally like, for my own enjoyment, but I actually get more enjoyment out of keeping a crowd moving. So sometimes I have to compromise.

If I was playing to a more clued up crowd maybe, yeah... Or if I was doing a warm up set. I'd be more adventurous across the board.

maybe because the drums are not on time and he doesn't like doing trainwrecks in his own sets? I actually like the Boy 8 Bit playable version, just simply made the beats on time and the bassline is not offensive to me at all. the Leif remix has got too much happenin and the original track gets lost in it imho.

but anyway, to me the main point is that you can't really make an absolutely deep and mixable club track out of burial. and only when you can hear the remix which hardly captures the vibe you realize the genius of his beats. which are not made for the djs and dancefloors.

anyway, is Raver mixable at all? I think hearing that one on a night would make me quite happy

why would the music you like not keep a crowd moving? why compromise on the quality of music just becaue your playing to brass mans?

i supose it depends what you in it for, does it not? fair enough dj's need bread and butter gigs but that shouldn't be the bases of what your doing it for! isn't that completely against what burial and his music is about? the fact he doesnt reveal him self or do gigs, because he wants his music to be enjoyed on its content not on his dj status or perceived persona by fans.

and its partly that reason why your remix isnt for me, if you are going to rework someones music in my opinion you should respect their concepts and reasons for making the tune.

any way i'm not trying to dark you out but just thought i would say.

i posted this link in the subfm irc chat yesterday to see what people thought. to my surprise a lot of people seemed to like it.

i didn't think it would make it to the forums! lol

originally i was against it but now hearing why you made the mix makes so much sense.

I've made it worse for you. But at least I can play Burial in my sets now, which makes me happy. Rather than just having it at home on the CD shelf.

Hopefully the people who have been coming up to me asking what this tune is will have gone off and bought the album. Which makes me happy too.

I dont compromise on quality, I adapt within the tunes I have available. One crowd might to not want to hear a techier Stephan Bodzin tune but they will want to hear an upbeat bassier Sinden remix. I like both, I adapt. I wont play what I dont like...

I DJ for fun, just like my production. I have no other motives...

How are the drums not on time? It uses a straight forward 2step-swing that goes easily with any 2step tune.

A tune only kills the flow of a set if the DJ drops it at the wrong time and place.

But hey, if you're ok with compromising your personal tastes in music in order to keep on getting gigs, then fair enough. I could never do that personally, as DJing would be far less satisfying when I have to dumb down the music I play to get gigs.
