To an audience of maybe up to 5 people

5 people on a higher musical plane is better than 4 in the doldrums of ignorance. Or something...

??? mixing or beatmatching ?
mixing is and should be so much more than beatmatching!
Always thought they were interchangeable to be honest. Wouldn't consider putting one tune on after another as mixing, and when I've done this people have asked "why don't you mix it?.
I don´t agree there. Sometimes, as you said, too much beatmatching kills the floor. And sometimes to beatmached tunes can´t bee considered a mix!
I think way too many dj´s just do one or the other . . .
some tunes is perfect for building up with beatmaching, and some builds better up other ways . . .
the vibe of the tunes is all that matters . . .
To me its just like film editing. How or where you edit doesn't matter.
The effect of the edit is what maters.
And now beatmatching is just the rule of how mixing is supposed to be.
Any thoughts on this anyone?

Why the hell not?

because no one wants to book us mashup djs anymore, at least not in seattle... kids here REALY like the "im darker and harder than all of yall" vibe so mostly stick to booking and promoting those acts
need to strike out on me own!!!
edit: and i agree with spiro 100%. there are several ways to mix of which beatmatching is only one... my jazz sets have almost no beatmatching but you wouldnt know

I'm interested now - how do you go about this non-beatmatching mixing or is it a professional secret?

D&B inspired me to get my first set of decks back in 1998 (still mixing a little bit of it)
Toyed with breaks until it became a bloated carcass of housey beats and whack bootlegs with not enough bass
Went back to my roots and re-bought a whole lot of hip hop and original funk breaks on vinyl and began to mix mash ups of hip hop, funk, electronic beats, dub & D&B in my club sets until i got bored with that... and discovered dubstep
As for non beatmatched mixing, its all about breakdowns and drops... its not as straightforward as plain tempo mixing, but not difficult. switching between half speed tempos (ie 180 bpm d&b - 90 bpm hip hop) gives you some scope for interesting mixes...

I reckon if we go for some time before the summer starts so we don't have to worry about everyone being at the beach but sometime after it stops being so cold and miserable.

Well I was thinking with your abilities to promote events and my ability to turn up, get pissed and put tunes on...
Think if we have a look around for potential venues and then talk about it next time I see you. Big empty pubs with beer gardens in areas that aren't too residential would be useful. May have a word with Bust the Box and TWA too see if they're up for it

To be honest, the Volks in-house system isn't too bad, so you could save yourself some notes on that one, especially if it's not all going to be particularly bassocentric. Think a Sunday afternoon thing would be better to be honest, do get the feeling that mid-week pisshead crews might not be that receptive, and we might want to get people involved that may have to travel and work the next day, catch last trains, etc.

On them rare ocasions you get a Dj playing a few genres, they tend to play the most obvious from the selection of tracks. Which gets boring much quicker. Was at a night the other day, where Cockney Thug was dropped, then luadacris then back to some breaks / House (or what ever). oh and that god awfull DNB tune with star wars in
I was bored after a couple mins.
I'm sure there are people who get it right, but i just havent seen to many good sets.

imo you're not a dj if you only play one genre
