The problem is it was such a transitional thing with dubstep. If you take a genre like acid house then 90% of people you ask are gonna tell you Acid Tracks because it was such a clearly definable new genre. But that rarely happens and with most genres it is more like 90% of people will tell you one of a dozen or so tracks.

Though I do have to say to those people who say the DMZ crew because 'all the guys before them were still dark garage'...Benga & Skream quite clearly had crossed over into something distinct from dark garage with some of their 2002/3 tunes that were around before Pathways had even seen a release, let alone Dubsessions. And yet I've seen people talk as if the DMZ guys were around before them! Yes the exact tune is debateable but for me it's a real stretch to assume all the stuff before Horror Show was dark garage. If your view of dubstep is 'must be halfstep' then it is very limited.

That's a hard one, because you have to take into account when dubstep developed its own identity. You can list garage tunes that sound kinda like dubstep but they're still garage. Who first sat down and thought 'i'm gonna make dubstep'.

Like fractal said, its easy to catergorise loads of garage tracks that have dark and bassy elements and call them dubstep. There were tracks about years before dubstep allstars 1 that were just as dubby and minimal.

if he released that in 2003 instead of 1995 he'd probably be a lot more well known round these here parts

Billy Cobham!! Ya, now there's your answer, what a killer drummer.
I suppose it's like the chicken and egg question.....the answer is evolution? It seems to me it was a gradual, natural thing rather than one person making tunes. That said, definitely El-B in the beginning, can hear that darker Garage/Proto-Dubstep in him.
Ok, I guess I'm just rehashing what djbmc said...ha!

Talking of Leftfield...so much respect for this song. When I first heard it, near enough the time it came out, all I looked for was similar bass-filled tunes...(after this I just listened to dark garage)...hmm havent found anything massively similar..oh hang on (years later)... Tectonic Plates? System by Loefah? Bahl Fwd by Skream..? Hmmm let me listen...............OOOOOOOOOOOO..............MMMMMMMMMMMMM...........GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
I found dubstep.

Yeah i was trying to think of some examples where there was a single release that would be defined as the start of a genre.. SMD Vol. 1 as the first happy hardcore release is only one that comes to mind.
