Yeah its a terrible term, by extension it suggests that everything else isn't highbrow enough.
A bit like LTJ Bukem's phrase 'Intelligent Drum n Bass'.

All it will take is for one of the broud sheets to do an artiical on dubstep, which will happen soon. and before your very eye's the scene you into will be refured to as" diner party 10 step penny farthing dance".
And i bet the Burial album is already sitting on a shelf with Macie fucking Grey and Nora Jones..
The new Billie Haliday!

i hate that expression

Coffee table dubstep?lol
dinner party halfstep
To be honest I hate the term myself, just seems to be a catch-all for anything that doesn't fit anywhere else (electronica, warp/planet mu, rephlex, etc). Surely everything else is "stupid dance music" in that case which is a bit condescending. "Irritating" might be a good substitute thinking about it.
Dinner party halfstep - lol - anyone remember trip-hop (ha ha ha)?

"what music do you like?"

"what?"
"stupid dance music"

"d&b"? not really...
"jungle"? for sure...
and while converting Jungle/D&B heads i usually explain it as stoned Jungle... not how Jungle sounds when youre really stoned but, as if Jungle ITSELF smoked a whole bunch of herbs... and maybe drank a few beers...
as much as i understand wanting to be new or different, i dont think the musics relationships should be frowned upon, its a beautiful thing

afaik idm was first a name of an experimental electronic music mailing list and has its origins in the artificial intelligence compilations released by warp.
or something.
and it really means incredibly dumb music.

Yeah it was the name given to the warp mailing list.
And what a fucking shit name too. Though i dont like 'electronica' either.
I think just experimental jungle/techno is fine.

Have you ever said "I'm off to an experimental jungle stroke techno night" though?
Labels do get a bit silly after a while it has to be said

I think some people might use this as a way to bring it into a frame of reference....its not the easiest style to describe and as there are definite influences from jungle drum and bass then I dont really see this as a massive problem....when you listen to the reeses and edits being used by vex'd then yeah its going to sound a little like modern dnb but at a different tempo..and the storming stuff has some elements of old techstep.....what about black mass.......granted not all of this is striclty dubstep etc etc just hard to describe.....
I say it sounds like slowed down jungle dnb a bit as a very good thing.
the problem is more when someone says this while looking like they chew on a wasp or with a moaning like'''''''booooo its just slowed down dnb''''''
big difference imo.l

experimental jungle/techno when some of the stuff have nothing to do with jungle or techno.
or are they so experimental then?
no, not offtopic at all.

Good shout and it has to be said that if someone's already done that experiment, it's not experimental any more.

the b-side to john b's "up all night" 12" makes a superb 2step garage tune on 33. i believe the track's called "take control".

ok, here's my two penneth for what it's worth
this idea came to me while trying to convince a couple of die hard drum & bassers down the pub the other night
basicaly i see it that drum and bass is very much about contradictions of sound and rhythm being put together that work, when inside the music you can get taken one way and then another with all the different textures going on
dubstep on the other hand is about space and atmosphere
i summed it up to them in this way
dubstep is like jazz, it's sometimes not what you play but what you leave out that is the most important part of the tune
this obviously sounded much better after a few stella's but i hope you see my point
