Normalization was undertaken in order to minimize duplication of information to prevent structural and logical problems the main case being data anomalies. Without normalization update, delete and insertion anomalies will occur leaving tables in an inconsistent state. Incorrect information will process through the system undetected that can cause problems e.g. deleting a product price that relates to specific suppliers will cause the total loss of information of the suppliers’ product price.
The data has been normalized to the 3NF(Normal Form) going through three processes. The 1NF eliminates repeating groups by separating them into new tables and giving each table a primary key. The 2NF eliminates redundant data by finding attributes that are part of a multi-valued key. The 3NF eliminates columns that are not dependant on the key by finding attributes that do not contribute a description of the key.
