No, its a pretty direct lineage, just with more distortion and at faster tempos. Just because you dont like it doesnt necessarily mean it has no merit.

Check out the band The Stubborn All Stars, made up of players from all these so called 'no talent' 3rd wave bands like Rancid and the Bosstones, but doing more traditional 1st wave stuff. Excellent.

Im not gonna deny that some of it is horrid, but I wont deny that some of every genre of music is horrid either. To call it a bastardization of ska is a little far fetched though in my opinion. If you dont like it, you dont like it, but most of these bands are far more skilled than your average pop punk band and the shows are off the hook.

I am pretty rubbish at differentiating between the two. I would say Engine 54 sounds more Rocksteady than Train to Skaville though??

it is one of those tunes pretty much at the turning point, not as slow as quick as ska, or as slow as later rocksteady.

there is a cracking double cd trojan retrospective that is essential..so many good tunes.

tbh that is something that has been retrospectively applied to him as a pioneer, when at the time he was making rhythm and blues, as were carl perkins, elvis presley etc. It may be seen as the precursor to rock 'n roll but it wasn't seen like that at the time.

I am not being 'contrary' sorry for having an opinion that differs from you.

A lot of the reason for the classification of chuck berry et al as rock n' roll is that a lot of the english bands - the stones, beatles, yardbirds etc - covered a lot of r&b on their early records. It doesn't make it rock n roll, despite having a clear influence.
