Canon EOS 400D
Nikon D40x
Pentax K100D Super
leaning toward the pentax atm
The Canon feels very cheap and horrible in my hands and the D40X only allows motorized lenses to be put on it. My vote goes to the Pentax K100D Super. Although, what's wrong with a Sony A200? Cheap, and probably better (in my opinion) than those you listed there...
The reviews I have seen of it suggest it picture quality is not as good, saw some comparison photos and the Sony see to have really weak flat colour.

Fuck that shit, a reviews a review. My opinion is the A200.
What are you going to be using it for?

Hmm. My opinion is that the Nikon noise compensation tends to be the best, ASIDE from the A200, but if you aren't going to use it for nights out then...Well, what's the point?
I'd disregard Canon completely (As I don't really rate their gear until you reach the 'L' series standard) and go for the K200D or a second-hand K100D, then. Some of the results I've seen from customers K100's and K10D's are savage as fuck.
Get a Pentax and then bung a 12-24mm on the front of it - Very fun indeed, and brilliant for landscapes!

Spending about £400-£500?

what? there's some beautiful ef-s glass that's cheap as buggery and would definitely be L if it weren't a cropped mount.

This.
The 450d is an absolutely amazing camera and you WILL NOT find better in the £4-600 price range. Fact!
Get it off Amazon for about £450 with the 18-55 lens (not a great lens, but if you're starting out you need something. Plus with
out the lens it's like £30 less and you can easily sell the lens for that price if you wanted.). Then send off for a £50 rebate from Canon.
You end up paying £400 for a brilliant piece of kit.
And you won't regret it, trust.

I shouldn't really slate any camera as I work in a camera shop, but I find, personally, in my opinion, from my experience, the 450D a complete piece of shit. Aside from the body physically feeling as though it's been made with straw and newspaper, and is going to float away out of your hands if a slight breeze comes in your direction, the results are piss poor. The depth of field on most results from has been shockingly abysmal. Whilst I'll grant that some of the EF-S stuff is nice, and their L series lenses are superb, I wouldn't go for a Canon personally, least of all the 450D.
I'd go for a D60 if you were around that area, or an A350. How confident are you with an SLR, elBe? Have you ever used one before?

not for a while, used to to a bit with an old film Pentax, and I mean Old coz tha was about 10 years ago and it belonged to my dad previously. Having said this I like to have as much control as possible, even if it means I have to sit and read a manual for a week before I can start shooting

not sure, like I sed havn't used it for about 10 years, not even got it any more. I already discarded the Cannon, nothing I have seen or read about it has inspired me, tho my mate swears by them. The Pentax edges it atm because of the back compatable lenses, just not sure its worth the extra cash.
also tryin to figure if its worth the extra £100-£200 to go for the K200d class over the K100d. Trouble with digital gear is that I feel the moment I buy they will upgrade and the price will drop.

Why don't you go for a Samsung instead? They're basically the same thing, they're made in the same factory by the same people.
GX20 is a better camera than both, but it's a bit big.

Yeah? might look into that then.
this all still depends on if I can justify spending this kinda dollar to myself

haha. the build is rubbish, but i never had any real problems with my old 400d. it wasn't exactly falling apart, it just feels nothing like my 50d. have you ever used the 300/350/400/450 series at all? i'm hella happy that i've upgraded, but i don't regret having used the 400d for two years, not at all. the sensor on the 400d was quite alright below iso 800, too. not brilliant but more than did the trick.

Why not go for a used one? We've just taken a Samsung GX20 in part-ex at our shop, and'll be selling it for peanuts, not much past £300.

Yes, I've used them all. As I said before, maybe it's because I'm a Nikon-fanboy, but everytime I see the results from a 450D, I can't help but feel they're shit. The camera is almost needlessly complex for a first-timer or someone just coming over to SLR's. You need to go through about 3 menu's just to turn the Liveview on. I mean, are you fucking kidding? I looked like a right mug trying to demonstrate to a customer when it first came out and not knowing where the fuck I was going. Also, it's got focus problems like a shitter, and the manual even
says that Automatic mode is bollocks and you should try and use it on manual. I dislike the camera.
