ok yeh chopping them up works - but having them both playing at once is generally cause for a really muddy mix
Generally, yes. But there are exceptions. If you have experimented with tunes like I have recently, you will find a few that work together!

On the tip of recording live. I had givin advice earlyer in this thread about just taping off the mixer and so on. But as i found out this weekend while recording Breakages set at one of our events, that its not that damn easy.
The DJ's who had gone on before him kept on redlining the mixer after being told not to. I had a few pints with Breakage before his set and we had discussed the whole recording thing in depth.
It really comes down to 2 things beside equiptment.
1) a sound engineer who has ninja like relfexes and is able to fix any flaw on the drop of a dime live.
2) Having DJ's who understand and keep there eyes pealed on levels at all times.
When i finally had the time to go threw and edit the wav, i found that the sound quailty on Breakages set was perfect and all the other DJ's had not done what i had asked of them, thus causing the levels to be all up and down on the mix.
It comes down to the respect between the DJ and the Engineer i guess.
Respect to all those who record live, it aint easy. LOL
