This is false. I spun as DJ Jack Pink on October 28th at a local bar. I played primarily dubstep in addition to the bellydance music that the dancers I was spinning for wanted. I live in a small Indiana town and no one in the bar had heard any dubstep before (I played primarily Stenchman, Vex'd, Distance, Ekaros, and Vaccine). I got many compliments after the show asking me what I played and where it was from. Plenty of people found this special and interesting and all I had to use was a Behringer KX1200 P.A. and a set of M-Audio MX5a's.

Yes, a sub is preferred, but people can see the merit in this genre without it, even newcomers.

I have to agree with this. Yes, a large portion of dubstep relies on sub-bass, but that shouldn't be the make-or-break selling point of the genre. It's about the vibe too, what feelings the music evokes. Choose tracks that are interesting for reasons other than being bass-driven if you haven't got a sub handy - it just seems like common DJing sense.

ye the low frequencies aint even herd properly on normal speakers.

u NEED a big system to hear the full tune, ur missin out on most of it if ur not playin it off a sub.

a BIG system is the refrence point for the sound.

yeah the system there is pretty legit... i was told they dont have a proper woofer tho? its plenty bassy regardless.

you should have gone to Loda for hh man. the bass in there is fucking outrageous... I drove up from alexandria (same distance) and i don't have a job either...

Same. I would listen to it but think yeah its okay i guess not that great, then when I heard it in a club with subs I was converted.

Interesting thread, I reckon the soundsystem is the most important part of putting on a dubstep night. Youve gotta have pressure if your gunna get people into it clubwise. Theres nothing like having your eyes rattling all night.

When setting up there are a couple of tunes I like to test the soundsystem with too, MALA - Learn, Monkey - Volume and afterdark - raw. It those 3 tunes dont sound sick Im not happy lol

yeah Loda did it pretty decent. though i was a tad biased considering i got to catch him at love in nyc, that system & the sound guy are absolutely bonkers.

I come from a Jungle\DnB background. One of the thing's that got me into the music was the massive drops that smashed your chest with a huge wall of bass....

It took another 12 years before I felt that way from another form of music.... Dubstep. Listening to Dubstep is fun, feeling & hearing it is amazing!

I wasn't liking it much when I first heard it on small systems, but when I finally got the chance to hear it on a large system I loved it. Now I can listen to it on my monitors and really enjoy it because I get that tingling feeling that reminds me of getting my bassface on at the club.

But nothing compares to hearing it on a nice system

Yeah, Steve's Bar Room was tight. I love the Speak-Easy vibe and that fact they had 8 15"s in such a small space. I'd love to take a stab at doing something at The 8x10 in Federal Hill (Baltimore). I played a DnB night there and was really impressed with the venue in every aspect. Speaking of subs/bass. The second party we did in D.C. we brought in some extra subs and ended up rattling 2 nice vases off of their shelves and breaking them.
The funny party is that the vases were back by the bathrooms which were really far away from the subs. That was a nice lesson in the physics of sound.

Can understand wanting to play on a proper system at a night.. It depends really I guess.. Ive been to parties what just have a couple pairs of nice monitors placed in the correct places and it sounded great you could feel and hear the low end, a sub would of made the sound over powering and messy. If its a small place what fits less than 100 people is a really big system needed? I personally think its all about the venue, if the system is terrible for dubstep then turn it down but if its a venue you're not familiar with, go check out a night or ask to test out the system before you play? If people want to book you they obviously like what you do so you have the right to see if the place is right for your bag.
