I almost never sample. I usually take a synth sound, widen it a bit, and detune one of the oscillators before running it into a distortion unit, usually fattens up the sound quite nicely instead of just overdriving one tone. More voices spread out nicely gives a nice warmer sound. How do you usually start building up a synth? Trimming samples real short, looping, and distorting them? Working with straight tones?
In that song specifically, what was your strategy for fattening up that distortion? It's crunchy without being harsh, very thick.
