Obviously music should be judged on its merit before any other factors. I don't think anyone here is saying otherwise.

But saying that making music is "just not something [women] feel the urge to do", is incredibly oversimplified and, IMO, missing an understanding of WHY so few women seem to produce music.

I won't launch into a diatribe, but I will say this: ask yourself WHY. Is it because they don't feel the urge? Or is it because there are many factors influencing their decisions to do so, that do not affect men?

I'll give you a hint. Start with being a woman and constantly hearing things like:

'They're not that way motivated or interested enough to make electronic music'.

Go from there. Use logic and not your preconceptions.

Who knows Shiva - it is a mystery. However it certainly doesn't stop women involving themselves heavily in other arts such as photography, graphic design, painting just to name a few.

I don't think it's a far leap to assume that it has something to do with the misogynistic tone that some people take when discussing something such as women in music, or really anything else men generally are the prevailing faction in... politics is another example. We have certain expectations of women. Like I know Shiva personally, but before I knew her she blew my ass away on the decks. Now hell, I was really fucked up so maybe it was an average set with a woman playing hardcore techno on 3 decks, and it was just her lack of penis that threw me off and made me dance...

or maybe it was the skills. Honestly before that, I'd heard a couple of females DJ... Rap, Mea, Baby Anne... now if those are what you have to go by, then yes, women are terrible DJ's and producers. But in all honesty, since then I've heard a lot of producers that school men regularly. DJ's who are more technically proficient... and honestly, knowing what I know now, it still sometimes amazes me when women do well at producing or DJing. And I don't think it's because I look down on women especially, so much as because there just aren't many of them.

I think a good part of that reason may have to do with being reduced to nothing more than the bleeding vagina between their legs(gash?) or simply ornaments for us to stare at while they spin in the nude... which frankly is how a lot of guys probably would joke about(but is it a joke?)

Haha, not meaning to take the piss - well not too much anyways .

Just trying to point out that anything, even what seems to be "the natural way of things" can and does change over time, as generally "the natural way of things" is just the direct result of what people say and do at any given time.

So if it is deemed as different from 'normal' in our society for a female to make electronic music, she is less likely to do it, and we can do our little bit to help stop peddling such ridiculous norms.

To put it another way, girls aren't genetically predisposed to like pink over blue, are they?

Anyways, your point about judging on musical merit over anything else is on the money!
