i think people make a bigger deal out of it than it actually is. id say its 100% personal preference. people who think its "cheating" or "youre not a real dj" or whatever need to just shut up. serato dosnt make you better at track selection or mixing (maybe beatmatching though). so you still need skill to use it. also nowhere in my dj handbook does it say "djs must own the tunes they play on vinyl".

n just look at the old school of reggae djs
who dont even try no fancy mixing
eg dj's like mark iration
hardly mixes @ all - its all about the selection - n he kills it every time

im noy saying justy playing all the new releases n crown pleasesers mkes them less of a dj - each to there own

it just inspires me to hear sets that u dont know 1 record @ all

But just because you only play released tune doesn't mean you only play croud pleasers does it! Look at oneman, one of my favourite DJ and all though i think he probably cuts dubs now, he started of mixing old garage with new dubstep releases, has tight as fuck mixing, and did something new.

For me you can select good tunes and it doesn't matter if there new, old, unreleased dubs or classics. And more importantly you know when to play what, to take people on a *PONCY OVERUSED TERM ALERT* musical journey.

i prefer cds to anything else. i didn't vote mp3 on the thing coz i refuse to pay money for mp3s. i do buy wavs of anything that aint released on cd, but if its only mp3 format i can get it on, then i'll do without.

Of course, I'm sure we've all gotten sick of hearing "Where my Money" or "Eastern Jam".

I guess from my experience there should be a balance between familiarity and exclusivity in a set.

I buy all three though I buy mainly MP3s and the odd CD these days.

I listen to music either at home or on the move and I'm not a DJ so having piles of vinyl cluttering up my small house isn't that useful.

I used to buy mainly vinyl in the 90s and have crates full of old drum & bass, house and techno releases but stopped buying vinyl soon after getting my first MP3 player.

I buy most of my albums (and Dubstep Allstars mixes!) on CD because I like to own the artwork and liner notes but individual tunes are much better value at £1 or less per track instead of upwards of a fiver for a 12” single. I only buy high quality MP3s though (and that's not a contradiction in terms, whatever vinyl purists will tell you). I wouldn't touch iTunes with a bargepole.

The only frustration for me is that a lot of tracks don’t ever come out on CD or MP3 and if they do it’s often much later than the vinyl release. I know this is good for DJs but it’s not ideal for people like me who believe in paying for music but don’t use vinyl any more.
