If we all went around doing exactly what we wanted, we'd probably conflict with each other a lot more.

Yeah, it's definitely slid too much in the last few years and things like the amount of CCTV and data collection need to be curbed (and I'd like to see changes in laws to give us freedom in how we treat our own bodies) , but I don't think you can have absolute freedom within a society.... I think the original quote is a bit shortsighted.

Yeah, absolute freedom requires absolute responsibility. Anyway, humans have evolved over many hundreds of thousands years to work together and collaborate for the better of whatever society they inhabit

i think what you had in uk not more than 10 years ago was free like a porn carnival compared to what's now
The original poster used the phrase "full dominion over their public and private lives".

I think your statement is true from a lot of angles - however we're actually have a fair bit more freedom to communicate, collude and independently organise ourselves these days - the internet has been a massive boost to freedom all across the globe.

I agree in the main, though, just making a little sanity check.
i think all our capabilities are controlled by them, so the more we think we have more power now it means the more we are under their control
internet wasn't the merit of those who put sites like wikileads on blacklists and who control every bit of information on the wire. internet is the last barricade and it won't last much if people won't fight back for thinking what they live now is better than what it could've been

Fair enough - is "freedom" an important value as apposed to happiness though? What if it could be argued that people tend to be happier/satisfied when they're given less options?

I consider myself very lucky to be alive during this time period... I love the freedom (even if it could be argued to be a mirage of freedom) that structures like the Internet offer us. There is still a big enough underground so that I don't really consider myself part of the mainstream, but I still get to benefit from all that society provides - fresh food all the time, a house built for me, a job to go to etc...

Is it inherently negative to restrict the human experience to make it more likely to be positive? Would more people screw up their lives if given enough freedom?

Lots of questions and no absolute answers in a subject like this...

Edit: As an aside, blacklists etc do worry me with regard to the internet. I was pleased to see them made a mockery of during thaqt fiasco with the Scorpions Wiki page earlier in the year - ridiculous. The funny thing about that was that censorship actually led to waaaaayyy more people seeing the inappropriate photo than ever would have otherwise!

freedom's a tricky subject - maybe we should shutdown prisons and let every murderer, peadophile and war criminal out in order to protect their right to freedom?

i think the fundamental right to life comes before freedom.... we still havent resolved that yet as a human race.

Erm. It's about moral codes though isn't it? For instance, If some ome goes into a school and kills and rapes the children, they have gone so far off the scale of what is acceptable they forfit the right to freedom. And there isn't and has never been a society that has been that permissive to allow such extreme behavior.

The moral grey area is tricky. War criminals? Who decides whether what they did was wrong or not (Sadam Hussain, Slobidan Millosivic). If you look at their actions they pale in comparison to what sucsessive UK and US government have done throughout the world. Have you ever seen a president or priminister being called up to answer charges of war crimes? No.

Well, you could probably do the pissing-in-his-wifes mouth part, and the slapping him, but the part about him coming up to you is a little bit ambitious, since he's dead.

every gun owner is an inbred moron....you would not own a gun otherwise.

In Fact I think everyone who owns a gun should be shot.

I understand the whole "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" argument, but honestly, people without guns have a much harder time killing each other.

Someone buying a gun for "protection" would appear to imply that they were willing to contemplate killing other humans.... that pretty much makes them a douchebag.
