How the hell would someone be upset about a big drop? Serious question by the way.

i dont think its a drop in itself anyone has a problem with, but rather the idea of a scene becoming too focused on a narrow conception of what it should be

i have a problem with it if it comes at the expense of other elements of musicality... if its JUST about drops. i personally enjoy a massive drop, as im sure everyone does, but i also love progressive, gradual structures, development through a track, and unconventional structures

which is why dmz work so well as a team, the different members bring different approaches, and so bring balance to a set

Yep, exactly. In my opinion dance music wouldn't EXIST if it wasnt for reggae.

the big drop is what killed dnb dead for me a few years back. I do see it creeping into dubstep, but i mix more like a techno DJ anyway (long blends/EQs) so it doesn't bother me too much.

I had no idea there was another way of mixing ^ ^

lol, I mix dubstep like dancehall, I juggle dubstep riddims like I juggle dancehall riddims. Quick mixes, bam bam bam. I like keeping energy levels up....

well the sad fact is that even techno djs sometimes don't know how to mix. what i have always loved about techno IS the loopiness and the sparseness. true, not exactly home listening music, but for a dj, it allows you to make the builds and drops yourself, instead of always relying on the "drop" to build things for you. builds your chops and gives you something to do besides stare at the labels and flip thru the crate.

that's why i love mixing techno with dubstep. i can have that loopy stuff to really broaden a mix, but still have those built in drops too. best of both worlds, if ya ask me.

yeah hear ya!
was fucking about yesterday mixing reeko n gunjack tunes in with with steppy bits, sounded heavy! still think one of biggest beauties of the dubstep framework is the potential to make proper songs as well as dj riddims... is cool havin the freedom to work both ways...

That's one thing I love when I go to a techno night is the freedom the DJ has to build and work the dance with cuts and mixes. Also with there being few breaks and drops in each tune you can just dance non stop all night BRAPP! :D

People need to stop worrying about a specific direction that dubstep is going in. Its being made globally and there certainly is not just one sound. Big drops have their place, as do some of the fillers that are made to compliment the big drop.

There enough deep progressive stuff being made and spun (headhunter, pinch, appleblim) to refute the idea that everyone is just interested in the big drop, or the wobble or whatever.

a dj who just recently started spinning dubstep (but had been spinning various genres for almost 10 years, including dub techno etc.) recently told me that she likes that about dubstep- that she mixes very quickly "Drop to drop to drop" she said.

LOL.

I don't know. I really had no idea taht dubstep would get so big. I'm still kinda shocked.

There are obviously way too many styles/producers/dj's etc. out there now to really make any kind of sweeping statements etc.,
BUT
i definitely notice a trend in up and coming producers, esp. from DNB backgrounds, that are all about the baddest bass and the biggest drop...
and they are often bangin tunes...no problem, but yes, a slight trend i noticed.

im thankful that there are still lots of people just interested in music, and creating something new and exciting, and wikkid, that don't set out to "make a large dubstep tune" or whatever.

im from dnb, i dont make drop music. as a matter of fact, i dont know what i make anymore. im with shiva here, in that i love the idea of using a series of records to make something bigger than the individual parts.
i like the idea of taking tunes that are good by themselves, and turning them into something beautiful when mixed with eachother. i like the idea of a tune being more than a tune when its part of a mix. the track loses its identity and becomes something more; it becomes one short moment in time within a longer moment.

for myself, i miss the times when i didnt know about producers, and i just knew when i heard good music. i let my pretentions go and enjoyed the music for what it was. a journey, colored by the way a DJ presented it.

yeah im tired, but i like what i said.
