i've tried every possible conversation option now, it freezes at different times but usually after the first thing, I dunno what it's called, when you can use Speech or Barter or something

The guy who makes the baddies red, he was following me but now I can't find him (I still have the red baddie thing)

Check the local map and see if he shows up where you lost him. If not, he's gone somewhere.
If you've already made it to the Lucky 38 and seen Mr House, he'll be at the Lucky 38 suite you get. If not, he'll be back at Novac.
