Getting it is what really matters. Money is just a means to get gear and gear is just a means to make music. So what's really important is just getting the tools so you can get on with it.
When I bought my MPK a while back, the extra fees and border duties were a bit of a kick in the gut, but ultimately I just wanted it to get here so I could move on with production. As long as I was actually capable of paying, I would have paid. You have to budget your money so you can rationalize buying gear, but ultimately if what the gear brings you is priceless it really doesn't matter.

Man...just decided today that I've gone an over extended myself and I'm going to have to sell an assload of gear...and probably at a lose because I'm under a time restraint.
If anyone is interested in good condition, functioning, smoke free studio equipment send me a PM about prices/shipping (I'll do international as well). I'll work on these on a case by case basis:
Joe Meek MC2 Optical Compressor, stereo, pre and post make up gain, compression release hold, stereo width, sidechain input.
FRM Really Nice Compressor, stereo, Super Nice mode, side chain input.
Electro Harmonix Memory Man Hazarai Delay pedal, stereo delay with multiple delay types and looping. Analog delay. tape tempo. one preset per delay type.
TC Electronics Hall of Fame Reverb pedal (analog), stereo reverb, pre delay, tone, reverb amount 12+ reverb types.
Electrix Filter Factory analog rack fitler, stereo, LPF/HPF/Notch/Bandpass Distortion/Trim LFO w/ five shapes, MIDI connectivity for sync and tap tempo. (Out of Production)
All items are either first owner or second owner and all are well cared for. Never gigged with 'em.

[Cue Perfect Day by Lou Reed]
Got the house to myself. Got a fifth of blended whiskey, some ginger beer, a bag of smoke and I'm making a long-ass, self-indulgent ambient-techno-dubstep tune. And the hood can listen to my good damn kick drums all night long. Eat it bitches.

Pour a sip out on the concrete for the projects that got lost in harddrive crashes.

Done and done
PS: massively self indulgent tune clocking in at almost 10 mintues.

as a general rule if you make a tune longer than 6 minutes you probably have insecurities about the size of your penis

Well. I'm digging this tune, so I'm going to go with tiny penis. Yep.

Instead of selling your gear you should start yet another $5 mastering service. Or charge people to run their stems through your hardware compressors at several different settings.

Techno being a largely male dominated genre in both terms of DJs/producers and crowd?
I'd say if anything it proves the point. Techno tracks are made long by insecure male producers to be played by insecure male DJs to insecure male dominated crowds.

I'd say six minutes is about par for a tune- especially if you're aiming for it to be played in a mix. Obviously noone really wants to listen to an album full of 6 min 32 bar loops but if its not designed for that then for a dj surely longer is better?

I've got my small-penis 10 minute tune on SC if anyone wants a listen.
Also, to whoever suggested 5 dollar mastering service, that is way better than my 5 dollar handjob idea...less messy too.

Just slap Ozone on the master and you can do both at once.

All this hand job talk has made me think of the male prostitute scene in beerfest
