All depends on your definition of friend. I'd say I have like 20 friends by my own and by american teenager standard I have 783.

I dunno, maybe I got lucky but in terms of the mates I have around where I am living now we all have fairly big get togethers all the time. Unfortunately they're getting less frequent as some of us move away or get too busy with certain things but we still have some big parties and trips away to places and shit that you can count on gathering a big crew for. Christmas eve just happens to be a night where everyone comes back home and also doesn't have work the next day. Also the pub near where I live is so good that it's naturally where everyone wants to go. Especially with the tradition of loads of us going making it more appealing. Plus most of the people I saw I would count as actual mates. Like there's a bunch I've known since the start of primary school. A load of the others are since secondary school and the rest are people who live around that I regularly hang out with.
