the best shit was made 93-97 like

no need to separate it out into two distinct genres

more or less yeah
later on it was the darkstep/skullstep (and some breakcore) guys that were making interesting shit imo - a scene which is kinda rejected and p much separate from trad dnb
and from the second half of the 2000s things started picking up again with commix, amit, kryptic minds, alix perez, icicle etc and ofc instra:mental, dbridge & co

meh prefer jungle to all that techy dnb. kind of loses the fun of the early nineties stuff. reminds me of dungeon :6:

it's the techstep & neurofunk stuff that's stiff & boring - tho there's a load of good records from that era *cough*blacksciencelabs*cough*

guys like dylan, facs, limewax later on etc were in full amen choppage mode just darker & faster

there was a good period where teebee and seba and paradox and those hippies took on photeks and bukems sound in the 00s and improved it (imo) like black science lab or some of calyx solo bits

it's not the most 'respected' period but it's the one with the best tracks and production imo - - - slightly too late maybe but still

which turned into noisia and phace and spor which might sound a little akward or too much nowadays or whatever, but that is imo only the saturation of it all. . . it's proper scifi music where the brain doesn't believe what just happened

bro step made those sounds seem less appealing imo, not so much themselves.

guys like dylan and limewax made one track each and then remixed each other for ten years

not even that

dylan and panacea did it for a few years and then limewax came and continued their sound for as long

therapi sessions is the worst most samey stuff ever imo

we can meet in breakcore where they take the piss out of it or gets it right :W:

current value was special for a minute imo

http://www.discogs.com/artist/283-Dylan?type=Releases
http://www.discogs.com/artist/327234-Limewax

not to mention these labels which are essential imo
http://www.discogs.com/label/519-XXX
http://www.discogs.com/label/523-Biotic

or all the labels dylan started or had something to do with. and limewax' l\b recordings

I'd have to disagree - "Optical & Ryme Tyme - Headhunters" is one of my favourite dnb tunes. A lot of Capone (Dillinja), Bad Company, Ed Rush & Optical, and Ryme Tyme are some of my favourite tracks, but hey personal preference I guess.

yeah but all the good no u turn stuff was released up until 1997. started going downhill after torque and ed rush went on to do virus which was/is :H:
best thing no u turn spawned after that was the turn u on records by horsepower

yeah like i haven't listened to that much and they do use pretty similar sounds and idea in each track so if i was more of dnb head/around when that was coming out i'd probably think it was bare dry, but shit like the rave, squadron and mothership bangs so hard imo

that turn u on horsepower one is fiiiiiire as well

while we're vaguely talking about techstepy dnb

i still think dillinja- silver blade sounds like insanely futuristic

ffs m8 - you know i'm always slightly joking. I have to. I've warmed up for both limewax and current value btw.
But... I mean aesthetically or in essence skullstep tracks are just very samey - it's not even an oppinion it's just the nature of it. Which is fair to comment on. And it's imo too safe or formularic compared with all the ideas exchanged throughout some of the other subgenres. Like the reese samples they go for, were figured out by other people in other sub genres. This does become trainspotting quickly, but:
They have to have some inventing going on.. which someone like current value could be an example of. He breaks some barriers sometimes. It's just such a shame how niche it was from the beginning and very difficult to build on when the 'rules' are so tight.
