Yeah, precisely. I'm all for it (within limits obvs). I'd go as far as to say that I LIKE this EP, just not enough at this moment to part with £6 or whatever for it, as I mentioned, I've got stuff that fills the need.

And I called it an homage because that's what it is IMO. Not a straight rip off or copy, it's bres taking from what influenced them and putting in a new context for 2k13.

Feel like I've been a bit misunderstood here  might be my fault, but I am defo pro-Etch and have been since that Red Green Blue release and I'm defo not complaining about anything either. As I've said elsewhere in this thread, this sort of sound is the most exciting stuff linked to dubstep I've heard since I first heard el-b and horsepower properly.

Guess my point is, I like the ep, but if I'm drawing for a hardcore track, or a dark garage track, there's plenty on my shelves I can reach for already. I know Etch makes more unique sounds, but I'm guessing that's not the point of an EP called Old School Methods, is it? I'll be sure to pick up his next release, hopefully on Keysound too. :4:

Also, quick note, big up to J-One for getting on vinyl and on keysound on "Sounds".

he's not arguing against "homaging"
Never said he was.
Harkat wrote:Too much homaging with the tunes for sure. People overdo it with the old rave samples. You can't have "SPREAD OUT AN SCATTAH" and the jungle/garage beep sound and the jungle warfare rewind noise in every tune. Especially when a lot of the tunes are good enough to stand up without relying on references to older tunes in that way.
This guy was.

I think garethom's coming at it from a completely fair angle.

At the end of the day...

If you can look past any samples which are simply nodding to an era and a movement, and see what the lad does with his breaks, rhythms, structures....

If there's any confusion, I'm pro Etch too. A few pages ago I said I bought his Rise EP and it's sick. Didn't mean to target the man for using the "scattah" sample or anything. Lots of my favorite music is ruff, darkside-but-not-too-techy jungle like No U Turn, "Black"-era DJ SS, Source Direct and so on, so I'm happy for more of those vibes.

I guess there just comes a point, as with some underground hip hop artists and stuff where music can get overly referential to where it feels like a "remember this?" first and a sick new tune second.

Never attempt to associate the Source with 5 panel caps ever again. That is an order.

nah steady on m8 there's loads going on
Yeah I overstepped there, but I struggle to find any scene (rather than the odd individual producer) doing anything more interesting.
Well, I'd say the shit night slugs and all their guys are doing is more interesting, to me that is. And there is techno out there that isnt just tech house lol
