Not sure how much my opinion matters (this might be my first post, can't remember...) but I think the true disconnect here lies in how one approached the genre. There are those with their roots in electronic music, and those who were originally metalheads. I remember first listening to Excision in 2009 being absolutely blown away with its midrange sonic assault, which had a similar feel to metal in its all-out attack on one's ears. Of course, listening to electronic music, I can see where people get this notion of 'true' dubstep, much with the notion of 'true' metal and the identity crisis with adulterated -core music (i.e. Dance Gavin Dance, or whoever is popular nowadays) as as opposed to Death, Atheist, Cynic, etc. (sorry, tangent)

Basically I see parallels between the "genre-war" of dubstep/brostep and metal/-core which also infiltrated the scene calling itself metal. Now, of course, 'dubstep' is no longer so obscure, having successfully reached the mainstream; so it doesn't make sense to say the "metal approach" to dubstep (essential midrange wankery, though I am not afraid to admit I enjoy it) is more popular than the electronic, "dungeon" approach because in a sense that would be saying metal is popular, which it most certainly is not !

I don't know if this makes sense I'm just musing, all I know is brostep sounds good on cheap headphones and stock stereo systems which is probably why its so popular. Subs really make the difference, not hearing (or feeling) the bass on a song like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-s0418xV10 would make it easy to understand why people don't recognize its awesomeness!

I've been thinking, a lot of us here on this forum have a few tracks or artists that are considered brostep that we like anyway. Trolley Snatcha - The Future, Datsik - Jenova Project and a few Bar9 and 16BIT tunes come to mind. For those of you to whom this applies, care to share your reasons?

I for one love Chasing Shadows. They have actual sub bass (and lots of it), they have atmosphere and soul in their tunes and most of their music is done with a class and attention to detail missing from most brostep. I think they're one of the best artists to walk the line between both sides of the argument. They were also my first real exposure to any kind of dubstep before I first heard Skream and Benga

Typhoon is huge. That's the one i still love, has a certain atmosphere to it. Not really feeling the other stuff anymore tho, 'specially after seeing CS last year... 2 hours of flux pavilion, noisia remixes etc

Yeah I had a feeling they'd be heading in that direction these days

Ah well, their Hench tunes and some of their 2009-2010 remixes are still pretty much the only brostep tunes that I'd put in the same league as my favourite dubstep tunes

Def have a soft spot for 16bit. Their track Skyline is just about as far from bro as it gets. Chainsaw Calligraphy is just novel, and shows a sense of humor about the aggy side of the genre. Bar9's Extort/Smokestack is an interesting release because it's almost two versions of the same sorta tune, just Extort is pretty bro with the midrange and highpass, while Smokestack, which i prefer, is more on the tearout dubstep side of things. I can really enjoy some Sukh Knight too. Knightlife & Spliff Dub Remix are solid tunes as well as Slang Like This w/ P Money. I dig the eastern samples. Big up Jakes as well. Not feeling some of the recent stuff on his soundcloud, but 3k out is a classic.

The brostep I really detest is the highpass-heavy shit that sounds like recent Dj Fresh with 'roid rage. All those arpeggiated trance pads n 'yoi's n shit trying to distract from the fact that the percussion is totally simplistic and soulless. Kick, reverse white noise into layed snares, repeatx64 really bores me. but get a few beers and maybe some md in me, and I'll tear out any day.

no hate for CS here either, just never got big into em.

Am i the only one annoyed at how lame some Brostep names are?

For example:

Zed's Dead = Zed Bias is Dead

Chasing Shadows = Chase & Status

Whenever i hear the names of these guys, i wanna punch a UKF listener in the face.

Looks like someone gave a Kpop producer a Skrillex LP and said "We should totally use this sound for our faggy boyband!"
