And where that really started to snowball into some bad shit for us down the timeline was when these irrational cosmologies of warring desert tribes were attempted to be turned into logic via people like René Descartes.

This is, ironically, the biblical origin of the scientific view that was prevalent until recently that nature was something to be conquered, dominated, subjugated. Once those Western philosophers had done away with god, they continued acting as they always had before but retained the attitude of separateness from nature.

misinterpretation of darwin's theories being reduced to survival of the fittest also gave folks justification for assholery

speaking of which.

it's funny cos people will put up this huge dichotomy of "science" and "religion", where science = progress and religion = evil/stupid/etc. that ricky gervais tweet that went round this week pissed me off cos "science", as shitty as that science was, has been used to justify patriarchy and white supremacy basically as much as religion, if not moreso, and has built advances on the torture of people in fucking death camps and yet people like him still swan around thinking they are on "the good side" cos they are atheists.

:z:

Funny how many major, major scientific discoveries were made by priests or funded by the Vatican etc. that affect our lives every day are completely forgotten, because science and religion never mix.

science and religion mix all the time. of course many discoveries were made by the church, they were one of the only sources of literate people in the middle ages. also lets not forget all of the science that religion has hindered, from galileo's terrible treatment to the suppression of women's knowledge of their private parts all the way up until just recently in our country (50's), the list is much bigger than that, but we all know the atrocities of organized religion, no need to get into it i suppose...

I'm not against religion or immediately supportive of all things that fall under the umbrella term of science... i'm just wary of any beliefs that require the user to give up knowledge and understanding for "faith". imho, relying on faith hinders the basic human desire to understand all

Yeah, agree, my point was backing up dfd's point of how stupid the "science = always good and right. religion = always bad and wrong." view is.

Not saying this is what I believe BTW.

I'm still pleasantly surprised that there are over 20% of veggies among ninjas that took part in the poll.

I have become a vegetarian since I took this poll so that's 1 more :)

A quick question for the veggies:

What the fuck do I eat for Xmas dinner?
