It's a signifier and the reason it is that is because of the quantity, not because of a need to put people in boxes.
so you could make a graph where people that tend to be pretentious, would in a certain period in time - often chose that as part of a 'uniform'.
Realizing those 'trends' is hardly pointing fingers, it's more being aware that
they chose to point the finger at themselves.
