not so sure about your sound selections mate, also sounds a little bland and unprogressive. my favorite part of the tune is the 2nd drop sounds much more interesting here, maybe start to add some breaks here and there to help keep things rolling, keep at it dude.

mate this has some serious potential man. after that little fade out it should just tottaly bro-out big style, this would be a sick intro to a bro-tune,

trepoz - if your new to production, this is a good effort man, sounds a bit similar to really old skream stuff. my main advice would be learn to apply reverb more carefully, the track could have a lot more space if you were more sparing with your reverb, i.e cutting it below a certain frequency.

Cubicle- Nothing cliched about an orgasm sample at all lol im not usually a fan of this kind of tune but this is nice, fairly well mixed, all it needs now is lil wayne.

joe-0121 - your percussion sounds could do with being much more prominent, especially the snare, its way too far back in the mix. i really like the melodies and atmosphere that you've created with this track. my only advice again is work on your percussion because thats the only weak part of the track for me really, maybe also add a slightly higher lead melody on top of the arpeggios and basses.

heres my tune, bit of jackbeats/foamo inspired electro house, mixed on awful headphones so be nice. any tips on getting the piano to sound nicer would be much appreciated doe, but dont all just say shit about the piano!

@ Joe - Sick tune mate, really minimal interesting vibes and it looks like you have taken your influences from alot of good producers to make something this dope. I especially like the rolling snares and vocal samples. i personally think the pitch automated bits from 1.11 onwards a bot too much but the breakdown after that is really nice and its got a good flow. i cant really say much about mixing cuz i dont have any posh monitors or headphones i'm using some sh*tty senhieser earbuds lmao. anyway, nice tune, nice influences, keep it up.

@ Trepoz For someone whos saying they are new to producing this really isnt bad. I'd check some youtube tutorials and general guides on EQ'ing and maybe dig up some samples from some sites (google: goldbaby / 808 [just to start you of]). One problem with this song i think there are too many ideas rolled into one. Try not to go to far of a tangent and stick with something similar to what you started with, or scrap the beginning entirely and work backwards from the end bit.

@ Cheeky Mmm cant beat them uplifting piano chords and 4 to the floor beat. got a glitchy synthy kinda feel to it which is nice. *waits for drop* quite cool reminds me of daft punk meets benga or something lol. nice use of atmospheric pads/fx in this, and everything sounds pretty well mixed from what i can hear, instruments are pretty clear and there are a few nice random bits in this song to keep the listener interest. a song with this much melody and chordyness could really use some vocal bits i think.

HERE IS MY WIP Can't mix it properly for a few weeks cuz i havn't got good headphones, some bits seem a bit out of time, idk why, i think i will have to bounce down stuff to audio and loop it or something cuz its driving me mad. Anyway let me know what you think

@1stfiest : Your drums are wayyyyyy to loud mate. I can't hear the sub on this, it looks there's only a midrange bass. Let's pass that mixdown thing, your main bass is too repetitive. It's time too add life with some more synths, pads, percs. Keep going on.

@Cheeky : Ok, bad headphones = bad mixdown ( but it could be worst honestly ). For the overall of the track, it's really not my cup of tea so don't think i can judge that correctly. Anyway, I feel like there's something missing on your track to keep your listener attention.

@stinjee : That saw lead sounds like the 80's. Your hats are not bad, the main idea of the track is decent but not perfect. The voice sample could be more worked, with reversed delays, filters etc. It's missing some midranges sounds on that.

@trepoz : For a new producer, that's pretty good. I think you found the forum to improve your production, some threads in DSF are real gold. Have a good ( and long ) read

@Cubicle : On the mixdown, that's sounding pretty good. Maybe add a bit more panning on your hats. There's a synth ( the one making * PEW PEW * ) that could need a bit more distortion and treatment. Good job.

@Joe-0121 : It's missing low end on that, and your arpegio gets a bit boring after time. There's a lot of good ideas on that, keep it up !

@trepoz - not bad at all. really trippy/chaotic sounding in places, and the tension is legit. i can dig it!

@stinjee - really synthy man. not really my style, but i respect the work involved. i did really like the intro, but the vocals need some touches.

@cheeky - that mid range bass i think could sit a little lower, its definitely was to up front. seems to have alot of energy, but im a more chill dub kinda guy

@1stfiest - yea agree with darj, drums are way to loud for sure. also where is your sub? those basses would fill out nicely. really cool start though, i can see it being polished up quite nicely. keep it up.

@darj - as always sir, tune is huge. your mixes are always on point man.

Darj- Great vibe and atmosphere. Don't really have anything else to say. Tried to nitpick, but I really didn't come up with anything.

1stfiest- This is a really bouncy groove. Real nice work here. It needs some variation, but I'm really digging what you have here.

Cheeky- That part that comes in at around 1:30 is awesome and caught me off guard a little. In some places it sounds a little more harsh then I think you were going for. (like around 2:25).

jim- those keys and the atmosphere is awesome. I also think your wobbles are clean. I'm hearing some mud in the mids, but that could be my headphones.

So this is a WIP I made for a friend, but I'm taking a break from the Moomba track I'm working on to work on this one.
The levels are off, but I trying to get some info on whether or not this is a solid foundation. I'm also thinking about keeping this at this length. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

@Houston Weather Not sure about the intro melody tbh, or maybe the synth - it just sounds really cheesy. Maybe try fatten up the mods and make it wider. Also the background of the track seems a little empty. I like your builds though and the drums, although the levels are off like you said. Just work on beefing the track up.
@jimbeaux Nice intro, and drums. The wobs are nice, quite old school. I like the call and response of the piano/bass. Not much else to comment on, you've got a solid track here.
@Darj Still impresses me when I hear your tracks, I'm sure I used to comment on some of your early tracks you posted here - clearly you've got a lot better. Nice vibes, the intrument samples and vocals sit really nicely as do the little percussion frills. Really no problems I can hear - tight track.
@1stfiest Tbh I'm not a fan of the mid/bass, it sounds a bit flat. Work on maybe livening it up a little along with the drums. Some good ideas, the track just need a little more energy and flow.


Been a while since I posted a WIP, working on a track for the Beatport Halloween comp. Currently the drums are pretty much placeholders and it's unmixed. Looking for any ideas on what maybe sounds off or what I could add?

@trepoz - yeah this not bad for someone new to production, very heavy in atmosphere. The first thing that pop in to mind is that you need to make the kick more prominent

@Cheeky - if you want the piano to sound better, try looking at it through a frequency analyzer and see what frequency its more dominate and then boots there and also add a high self eq to make it shine more and high pass any useless low frequency so it doesn't add unwanted energy.

@1stfiest - try adding some light compression to tame some of the peaks and make sure to lowpass anything over 20K on eq

ok, here is my WIP. Wasn't trying to go for anything creative, just testing out some new production technique i picked up. So feel free to comment and leave some advice and constructive critique. Thanks in advance

Why do people always give feedback starting from the top of the page instead of starting with the post above them.

@thelasthing - there's some major eq problems between your bass and snare, huge clashing. Pick out the strong parts of your bass and cut out where the snare hits. Might also want to have another look at the bass distortion, seems a little unclean.
@jimbeaux - creative choices aside (don't agree with the piano in there at all), bass is pretty decent, though sounds a TAD muddy. Kick needs some beefing, as does the rest of the percussion - have you done much compression on it? Bass variations are nice though, some good automation and variance.
@darj - farkin' nice man. Love jazzy elements in dubstep. Not to mention you've got some great tom/bongo hits in there which really complete it. Also like the selection of reversed rides/crashes as fillers, fits well. Good stuff I'm doing another tune like this if you're interested in some stems? If so, PM me and let's chat

Thanks for everyones feedback i have now added a sub bass and turned the volume of the drums down a bit and added some resonance to the mid basses so they dont sound so flat. Also going to play around with the adsr of the mids to give the track more.movement and was thinking of adding some congas to liven the whole thing up a bit. Once agin thanks for all your feedback. I will look into coMpression and high passing everuthing when i get some new headphones next week =)

Also, as it drops with the same lead it becomes really repetitive and as you say the drums are placeholders as some momentum is def needed which the drums should bring.

Burgeamon, I suggest getting sausage fattener, and using the dimension expander on massive, it always makes things sound bigger, and maybe just play around with the main frequency in the EQ"

The kick isnt hitting hard enough, its too quiet, dont be afraid to bring your drum up a LOT you will hear the difference straight away, apply side chain compression to everything, liturarly create a new midi track, write a kick that hits everytime the kick and snare hit then copy past along the composition and mute that kick and only use it as a signal to side chain comress synths and cymbals (obviously not to the kick and snare itself) . Basically what I mean the groove is lost because its basement is the KICK and SNARE they have to be heard, otherways its good.

Burgeamon : very cool. groovy as hell, I honestly have no suggestion as to your production or composition, all I would do if I was working on a tune like that I would try to write a main melody for it otherwise its not music enough (FOR ME) , when there is no melody there is no song, people would not be able to remember it, it is aslo the hardest part of music writing for me, some easy melody may take a while to write, but usually I do just like you did, I aslo create the RYTHMIC body of a tune and the groovy stuff, then try to add a melody (which eventually changes the tune a lot) . Good work keep it up.

thelastthing : I only hear the 'click' part of your kick drum an only low part of your snare, otherways its good composition wise.

mthrfnk : you have grown man ) your tune is groovy and catchy, the main pad/lead/stub thing is a bit too loud, otherways its very good. THE kick and the snare are to low, I dont hear/feel them .

jimbeaux : cool work, I love the melodic piano leaks and the choire background, not many people try to make deep dubstep aslo melodic, so I have no suggestions apart from keep working and I reallu like what you are trying to do.

1stfiest : Trust your ears man, even when mixing on bad headphones, lack of equipment doesnt mean you cant mix well enough for a demo, try to load a tune that you like and adjust levels of your instruments accordingly to the levels of instruments in a tune you like , do that with help of your ears, spectrum wont help. Now my turn, usually my tunes get very messy because I try to use many instruments in order to sound interesting, but usually it does not end well. This time I was trying to write an accompaniment (music) for vocals, so I did, then the guy asked me for the music so he can practice singing and what I realised is that without vocals it seems to sound better, because the tune kind of always gives you a HINT of what main melody supposed to sound like but at the same time does not uncover it completely because its vocal's job you know what I mean ? Tell me what you think about that

alexeyherman- I really dug the loudness and distribution of your sounds, man. Not really my style of tune, but it was well-made all the same. Just keep up the good work brotha.

wikyd- Like you said, it is sounding a bit muddy at the moment, but if there's anything I would add or change, I'd fix up the first drop and make the heavy bass fade in. That or make it like the second drop. Those solid heavy-bass notes can get rather annoying imo.

burgaemon- Really dug this tune, reminded me of something bassnectar-ish. Especially like the up-beat change-up in your drums and the suddlety of your bass. I'd just change up the placement and variation of your bass for further drops if that helps.

subfect- Seemed a little too ambient imo, but ambient dub isn't one of my strong points. I would add some other type of snare and a little more bass, but thats just me. I like how you do your thing though man. Keep it up.

@cabre: First wip, nice atmosphere and drums. I like the glitching, tbh this isn't my kind of thing but I like it. The mix sounds okay. Not too sure about the blips during the later parts, sound a bit weird. I like the 2nd and 3rd too although all 3 seem quite similar in terms of the overall sound, might not be a bad thing. Some nice ideas, quite original tracks.

@alexeyhermann I like the shuffled beats you have going on, the synth work is nice too. Bass guitar is a nice touch, although a tad loud perhaps. I love the blips that come in. Nice tune man.

@Burgeamon Cool intro, the drums are nice and clean too. I'd say the vocal needs to be louder a bit. Bass design is nice and mixes well with your drums. A really clean track, good work. One final thing, the vocal repeated chop stands out a little too much.
